My daughter is starting high school this year. She’ll be taking French, and she needs a bilingual dictionary. We’re getting her a Langenscheidt French/English paper book to use at school, but I wondered if there was a dictionary for her iPad as well. I wanted an app instead of just an ebook, because I was hoping for audible pronunciations. Turns out there are a variety of dictionary apps, but the one we selected is the SlovoEd Deluxe French<->English Dictionary for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. This app has 88,000 entries, and pronunciations for 20,000 French words and 20,000 English words – spoken by a native speaker in each case. The dictionary is on your device, so no internet connection is needed, and there are no subscription fees. You can do wildcard searches if you’re unsure of the spelling, set up flash cards to quiz you on vocabulary words, and there’s a “morphology module” to translate words in any grammatical form. The Deluxe dictionary app is $24.99, and there is a compact version for $9.99. The SlovEd dictionaries are available in: French, English, Dutch, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. They’re available in a variety of language combinations.
