I have not done a bluetooth headset review for a while now. It was my own fault, I had reviewed too many earpieces in a relatively short amount of time. The tech-rush was definitely gone….. That being said, the Plantronics Discovery 925’s sleek & slim form factor drew me out of my bluetooth earpiece hiatus.
The Discovery 925 easily paired with my Blackberry 8820 and my wife’s Palm
Treo 680. A feature becoming much more common is Multipoint technology, which
lets you pair two different Bluetooth devices at once. Allowing those lugging
around two cellphones the ability to use one headset with the both simultaneously.

The Plantronics 925 bluetooth headset has a very stylish, high-tech look. So
much so, you could almost call it fashionable. It has a look that will appeal
to men and women alike. The design and function of the earpiece are very simplistic,
while not giving up but a few of the functions of the typical highend bluetooth
headset. Most of its capabilities are controlled by the main multi-function
button located on the exterior of the device. The multifunction button is in
the center of the diamond. It is large and very easy to press, even when in
the ear.
The earpiece is constructed of a rigid plastic. The design/construction
is more fragile than the iPhone, BlueAnt or Jawbone headsets I have used in the
recent past. I would definitely avoid sitting on it…..
The only thing noteworthy on the interior of the device is the gel eartip.
Plantronics sends three different sizes (small, medium, and large) of eartips.
Their unique design allows the 925 to sit reasonably securely in your ear without
the aid of an earloop (definitely a plus). The gel eartip is soft and very
comfortable.
The top of the earpiece has the volume control. The single button allows you
to cycle thru three preset volume levels. But you have volume control via your
cellphone as well.
The base of the earpiece has the micro-USB power/charging port.
In my opinion, the best feature of the 925 is its case. It not only protects
the headset from a majority of nasty things that could happen to it, but charges
it as well. Plantronics, all I have to say is BRILLIANT!!! The case battery has multiple headset charges before you need to plug it in. It is my plan
on my next trip to see if the case will keep the 925 operational the duration
of the trip without plugging either into AC. I have been using this headset
for over a week now and have yet to plug the pair into the wall.
The case is very well made. The exterior is made of a quality leather with white stitching and finished edging. The flap is held shut by embedded magnets.
You are able to charge both the earpiece and case battery without ever taking
the headset out of the case.
The Plantronics 925 is not the smallest but definitely one of the lightest
(and most comfortable) of the high-end bluetooth headsets. When I initially
saw pictures of the 925, I thought it was going to closer to the size of Apple’s
bluetooth earpiece. But either way, its so light and comfortable, after a while
you forget its in your ear.
As I have stated above, the Discovery is surprisingly comfortable. Once I figured
out I needed the larger of the three gel earpieces, the headset sits in my ear
very securely and stays place relatively well (although, I would not run with
it in my ear).
The 925 comes in three colors: black, cerise (purple/pink), and gold. I personally
could not pull off the gold or cerise but know many who could, definitely making
more of a fashion statement than the usual black headset.
The call quality was excellent when the earpiece and Blackberry are on the
same side of my body (there was a bit of static when they were on opposite sides
of my body). Plantronics’ AudioIQ digital signal processing technology reduces
background noise considerably. Those I talked with said my voice sounded clear and natural. It passed my rush hour trial, I could hear and be heard while
walking downtown very well.
Overall, I really like the Discovery 925 by Plantronics. With an MSRP of $150
(Internet pricing ranges from $65-120), it is one of the higher priced bluetooth
headsets on the market today. But if cost is not much of an issue and high-tech
styling and a good (to great) audio experience is what you are looking for, I
can definitely recommend the 925.

This is the only earpiece that I have owned that actually stays in my evidently odd shaped ears. The first one died after several months, but Plantronics replaced it no questions asked…sent me a new one before I even sent the old one back. Excellent customer service!
I wish someone would test Bluetooth with Dragon 9 to see if the slow speed of bluetooth would work well enough for standard business dictation Some experts do not reccommend bluetooth.
Richard: Although Bluetooth can be variable with voice recognition software, there is a Bluetooth headset that Dragon recommends: The Sennheiser BW900 gets a 5 out of 5 rating.
The Plantronics CS50 USB Headset also may work for you. Dragon gives it a 4 out of 5 accuracy points. It’s important to make sure you get the USB version and not the regular CS50.
It’s also important to realize that the environment can make a big difference in whether or not a wireless headset will work for you.
Good luck!
I agree with Erin, environment is a big factor when choosing the right headset for you. Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset looks very nice. The design is phenomenal, its suitable for all the fashonistas out there. A bluetooth headset with multipoint technology and a very nice portable charging case.
