Meta Quest 4 Concept

Meta has shelved its 2026 Quest 4 prototypes, pushing the true successor to 2027 at the earliest. Industry reporting from June 2025, leaked internal memos from December 2025, and Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth’s January 2026 Davos interview line up on the same picture: both planned tiers of the next flagship are off the table, and no consumer Quest 4 hardware is shipping this year.

If you’ve been holding out for a Meta Quest 4 in 2026, it’s time to reset expectations. Here’s what the new timeline actually looks like, and why the Quest 3 quietly earns its spot as 2026’s headset to actually buy.

What the Pismo Low and Pismo High Cancellations Mean

The two prototypes at the center of this story are Pismo Low and Pismo High, internal codenames for the mainstream and premium tiers of the Quest 4 line. Both have been canceled, and that double kill is doing most of the work in setting the new timeline.

Pismo Low was tracking as the direct Quest 3 successor at a comparable mainstream price point. Pismo High was the premium variant, reportedly with specs above Quest 3 but not pitched directly against Apple Vision Pro. Killing both at once isn’t a single-SKU slip. It’s a platform reset: Meta is rethinking the form factor, optics stack, and compute target before committing to silicon.Meta Quest 4 - Meta Quest 3 Concept

The December 2025 memo leak fills in what comes next. Quest 4 is back in development as a gaming-focused flagship that will deliver a “large upgrade” over Quest 3 and “significantly improve unit economics,” per the memo as reported, which strongly suggests an end to the subsidization strategy that has kept Quest pricing aggressive. That points to a meaningfully steeper price than the current Quest line when the device lands, and a longer runway for it to ship. You don’t restart a flagship VR platform at that level and ship it nine months later, which is exactly why the 2027 timeline is credible.

Meta’s Puffin Ultralight Headset Is the 2027 Bridge

Before the Quest 4 arrives, Meta is prioritizing a lightweight headset codenamed Puffin, referred to in earlier reporting as Phoenix or Loma, and now targeting 2027. The pitch lines up with what Meta has been telegraphing publicly for over a year: a device built around comfort and long-session wear, not raw spec leaps over the Quest 3.

Expect a meaningfully lower weight than the Quest 3, achieved by offloading the battery and compute to a tethered puck small enough to slip into a pocket. Reporting puts Puffin at less than 110 grams in headset weight, roughly a quarter of Quest 3’s on-face load. Use cases skew toward media, social, and fitness rather than headline VR gaming, and pricing is reportedly less than $1,000 per leaked sourcing, positioning Puffin as a premium tier between the Quest line and Apple Vision Pro rather than a Quest 3S-style budget play. This is a bridge product, full stop. It is not the Quest 4.

Why Holiday 2026 Buyer’s Guides Don’t Hold Up

Most “best VR headset for holiday 2026” lists were written assuming a Quest 4 reveal would land before the shopping season. With that off the cards, a lot of those guides are now pointing readers at a product that does not exist.

The honest 2026 picture is narrower. Meta’s lineup stays put: Quest 3 as the default mainstream pick, Quest 3S as the budget gateway. Apple Vision Pro still owns the premium tier at a price most buyers won’t touch, and without the game library Meta shoppers actually want. PlayStation VR2 is a strong console-tethered option, especially with the PC adapter giving it a second life. If a guide is telling you to “wait a few months for Quest 4,” the wait is now closer to 18 months.Meta Quest 3 Image

Meta Quest 4 Price and Release Window: Everything Confirmed So Far

There is no Meta Quest 4 pricing or release date to confirm in 2026. Both Pismo prototypes are off the roadmap, no consumer-ready Quest 4 hardware is shipping this year, and Meta has not officially named or scheduled the device. The first credible Quest 4 teases are most likely to surface in 2027, with an on-shelf window between holiday 2027 and early 2028.

Meta Connect 2026 is locked for September 23 and 24 at Meta’s Menlo Park campus, and the early teases from Mark Zuckerberg point to new smart glasses rather than a new Quest. Bosworth’s recent on-record comments have been about defending Quest 4’s place on the roadmap, not previewing it, which makes a Connect 2026 hardware reveal extremely unlikely. The likelier Quest 4 stage is Connect 2027.

In the meantime, current Meta hardware remains widely available. For the running tally on every credible Quest 4 leak so far, see our Meta Quest 4 explainer.

The Quest 3 Is Still the 2026 Pick

The math on a new headset has shifted in a clear direction. If you don’t already own a current-gen Meta headset and you want mixed reality, the full Quest game library, and PC VR via Link or Air Link today, a Quest 3 upgrade still punches above its tier, with the cheaper Quest 3S as the budget entry point. You’ll comfortably get 18 or more months out of it before the next flagship even lands on shelves, and the runway only gets longer if the next Quest’s reportedly unsubsidized pricing lands notably above Quest 3.

The case for waiting is narrow. Quest 2 and Quest Pro owners with light, casual use may be better served by the ultralight 2027 device. Buyers chasing the absolute best optics and compute Meta has to offer can hold out for late 2027. Everyone else: the Quest 3 is the Meta headset that actually exists.

Meta Quest 4 FAQ

When is the Meta Quest 4 coming out?
Mid-to-late 2027 at the earliest, with a likely on-shelf window between holiday 2027 and early 2028. Meta has not officially named or scheduled the device.

Is the Meta Quest 4 cancelled?
No. The 2026 prototypes (Pismo Low and Pismo High) were cancelled, but Meta restarted the Quest 4 in December 2025 as a gaming-focused flagship targeting 2027 or later.

How much will the Meta Quest 4 cost?
Meta has not announced pricing, but leaked memos describing the next flagship as unsubsidized and built to “significantly improve unit economics” point to a meaningfully steeper price than the current Quest 3’s $599.

Should I wait for Meta Quest 4 or buy Quest 3 now?
For most buyers, Quest 3 is the smarter pick. You get 18-plus months of use before the next flagship even ships, and current pricing is well below what the next-gen Quest is expected to cost.
