Design and features

I’ll bet I have more than 50 USB wall chargers scattered throughout my home. I find myself needing to buy ones with higher and higher power output as gadgetry becomes more power hungry. Plus, many portable devices have switched to the “Swiss army knife” utility of USB-C.

To make matters more interesting, unless you’re in an airport, wall plugs aren’t usually located in convenient places, often hidden behind tables or couches. As a result, I’m always looking for ways to hide wires and make my tech easier to access. One discreet wire powering multiple devices? Sweet!

When Joyroom’s PODIX 140W, five-port charger arrived, I was eager to get it out of the box.

It’s relatively small, about the size of a baseball. Well, what a baseball would want to be if it were a cube. It’s elegant looking.

The body has some pleasant heft to it, weighing in at a tad more than a pound. There are magnets built into the bottom and sides that align with one in the reusable base to hold the PODIX stable. I think it’s cool that the cube secures on either side or the base with the same magnetic adhesion. I wish the magnets were a little stronger because there were a few occasions when the charger became dislodged from the base when deploying the retractable cables.

Speaking of retractable cables, there are two with USB-C connectors integrated into the PODIX. A gentle pull extends them to any length up to 80cm (31 inches). I find myself wishing they were about a foot longer. That way, I could use and charge my computer while sitting on the couch. Still, I love them and appreciate the clean look when they are stored and the ability to charge gadgets without polluting my end table with piles of cables.

The PODIX receives power through an IEC320-C7 cord.

On the front, there are two USB-A (30 watts maximum) and one USB-C port (140 Watts maximum). It’s worth mentioning that the total power output is 140W, shared among all five ports.

A colorful animated display can display a happy face with a pinwheel, party horn, or blowing bubbles. Cute! A double-tap of the button changes them. Single-tapping toggles the display between the happy face, total power output, and power output on each port. Triple-tapping rotates the display 90°, and holding the button for two seconds turns the PODIX off.

Final thoughts

Before receiving the Joyroom PODIX, I had five wall chargers plugged into the sockets under the end table where I prefer to work. With PODIX’s two retractable cords and three ports, all the others joined their brothers and sisters in the drawer. I appreciate the clean look, and with 140 watts of total output, all of my frequently used gadgets charged quickly and were ready to go when I needed them. Excellent job, and thank you, Joyroom!

What I like about the Joyroom PODIX 140W Charger

  • Ample power for even the hungriest gadgetry!
  • The retractable cords are fabulous for clutter-free charging!
  • Bright and friendly display

What needs to be improved?

  • Longer retractable cords would be helpful
  • The magnet that secures the charger to the base needs to be stronger.
