REVIEW – Sometimes I need power in a place where I don’t have any power.  As an example, I recently decided to add some shelves to my shed, but I don’t have any electrical outlets there to power my tools.  To solve problems like this, I am testing the OUPES Exodus 2400, a power station large enough to bring portable power wherever it’s required.

Design and Features

The Exodus 2400 power station looks like a large, rectangular box made of matte-black plastic.  All of the inputs are on the back and the outputs on the front; the sides have grills for airflow.  The bottom has a set of 4 rubber feet to keep it from sliding around, and there are a pair of large handles, one on each side.  All of the inputs, outputs, and buttons are clearly marked, and the LCD is sharp and easy to read.  Overall, the 2400 has a straightforward, practical design that I like.

Assembly, Installation, and Setup

The Exodus 2400 arrived in a sturdy box protected by custom foam inserts.  I removed everything from its packaging and found a helpful tag on the power port in back that recommended that I fully drain and recharge the power station before its first use.  When it arrived, it was already 66% charged, so I drained it by running a fan in my home office.  (As a side note, it takes forever to drain a power station this large using nothing but a fan.)

While waiting for this to finish, I read through the manual and found it to be clear and easy to understand.  It has sections that describe each of the buttons and ports, the features of the LCD display, how to charge via AC, solar, and car, and how to install the app.  There’s also a page with the specifications and two pages that describe the error codes that could occur.  This is a well-written manual.

Once the 2400 was completely drained, I recharged it via AC.  The manual said it should take about two hours to fully charge, and that’s exactly what I found.

I also tested charging via a solar panel.  I already own an OUPES 240 W solar panel, so I charged the power station on a sunny day and found that it charged the power station to less than 60%.  If I am going to need the full power of the station every day, then I will have to purchase a second solar panel.

The only weakness of these solar panels is that they don’t come with any sort of “legs” to prop them up, which makes it difficult to maximize their efficiency.  Building an adjustable base to hold up the panels would be another way to get more power.

Performance

To put the OUPES Exodus 2400 through its paces, I selected four ways to test it.

The first way that I tested the Exodus 2400 was to use it in my backyard to provide power for my tools while creating shelves for my shed.  I created a video showing everything I did:

It was great being able to measure and cut everything right there next to my shed rather than having to walk back to the garage for everything.  The 2400 handled my mitre saw with ease.

The second way that I tested the power station was by powering a pair of MacBook Pros.  My wife and I both use these computers at home, and they both use less than 100 watts.  If we ever lost power from a storm, it would be nice to be able to run our computers for several hours.

The laptops were not a challenge for the Exodus 2400, and we could work all day without any problems.

The third way that I tested this OUPES power station was by powering our Ninja frozen drink maker. Suppose we went on a picnic with our family and wanted to make frosted lemonade, like those made by Chik-fil-A, for everyone. I found that the Exodus easily powered this kitchen gadget, even though it took nearly 40 minutes to make drinks for everyone.

The final way that I had planned to test it was by controlling it with the app.  OUPES provides a link to the Cleanergy app on Apple’s App Store.  The good news is that the developer asserts that the app collects no personal data; the bad news is that the app has a terrible 1.9 star-rating.  I read through several reviews complaining that it won’t connect to the power stations, so I wasn’t expecting much from this app.

When I started the app, I was immediately confronted with a requirement to create an account, a requirement that is not mentioned on OUPES’ website or the App Store page.  Really?  Why on earth do I need an account for Shenzhen Weipeng Shiji Technology, the creator of this app, in order to do something as simple as change the settings on my power station?  At this point, I deleted the app and moved on.  I think this is a failure on OUPES’ part; if they want to provide an app for their gadgets, they should make their own, make sure it works well, and not demand invasive requirements like creating accounts.

One final thing to note is that this is a beast of a power station.  It weighs over 45 pounds, which is very heavy; I needed both handles to carry around.  Some folks might find this power station too heavy to be practical.

Final Thoughts

oupes exodus 2400 10

The OUPES Exodus 2400 is a very capable power station that can provide 2400 watts for other gadgets that need to be powered up, whether through AC outlets or USB ports.  Its dual handles make it easy to carry, but at 45 pounds it does strain the definition of portable somewhat.  I used the 2400 to power tools out near my shed, a pair of laptops while working at home, and a slushie maker, just to prove I could take it on a picnic.  It performed flawlessly in all these tests.  If you need a large power station, I recommend taking a look at the Exodus 2400.

What I like about the OUPES Exodus 2400 power station

  • Portable and yet powerful
  • Plenty of outlets and ports
  • Charges from AC and solar

What needs to be improved?

  • Create a better iOS app
