REVIEW – Electric toothbrushes are not new, nor are ones that have companion apps. The Oclean X Ultra S however, is the first I’ve used that uses AI to interpret and inform you on your brushing habits while coaching you for better results. It’s a full travel-ready solution that should be on your list to consider if you’re in the market for a new smart toothbrush.

Design and features

The X Ultra S Smart Sonic Toothbrush has a clean design that is sized perfectly, not too big, not too small. The brush heads are easily changed when it’s time to replace or when you want to switch brush type.

Built-in LED on the handle’s end turns from white to red when you are brushing too hard.

OXST 09

The touchscreen lets you easily swipe through modes and then the power button lets you start and stop a brushing session. The same screen shows you the result when you finish.

OXST 15

The charging dock and the magnetic mirror holder are both minimalistic and work great.

OXST 04

The app takes all the data from brushing and basically provides a matrix of feedback helping you to improve your brushing habits.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

Unbox everything and then fully charge the brush handle either with the charging base or the travel case. For each you’ll need to provide a USB-C power adapter.

Pretty clear visual to know it’s charging.

Decide which Brush Head you want to start with; Ultra Clean, Ultra White or Ultra Gum Care. I opted for Ultra Clean. Push it onto the Brush Handle. It uses a similar connection to most electric toothbrushes that just requires a solid push.

The battery lasts for up to 40 days, so you can decide if you want to have the charging stand out all the time or just when you need to charge. The magnetic puck is a nice way to keep the brush off the counter and out of the way.

Scan the QR code to download the Oclean Care+ App, create an account and sign in. When you power on the brush the first time, you’ll be prompted to connect the brush to the app and also to Wifi as well as set up a user profile.

If that sounds complicated for a toothbrush, it’s definitely beyond the old Colgate, but it’s pretty simple and it’s why Oclean can store and analyze the data about your brushing. It may also prompt you for a firmware update which is easy, and again super clear if it’s in process or finished.

There’s also a well designed travel case which houses two brush heads and the handle.

Performance

I’ve used a couple of different electric toothbrushes over the last two decades: a Sonicare DiamondClean and an OralB Smart Series, if I recall correctly. They were both fine, but for some reason, I always seemed to default back to an OralB CrossAction manual brush. My goal with the Oclean was to try and switch over and make it stick.

Set up was easy and the first session set the tone. The display is really easy to see and to read. It’s a touch screen so you can swipe through the different brushing modes, and then it’s just a quick press when you’re ready to brush. It uses a quadrant approach so after 30 seconds the brush tells you “Next area”.

What’s fun about the voice is that it uses bone conduction technology to have that audio come through the brush head to your teeth. The better contact you make the louder it is. The voice has a high timber and an accent that can be hard to understand if you don’t already know what it’s saying.

“Too much pressure” was the next one I heard, and often as it’s something I’ve always done. I’ve typically bought medium to firm brushes because the soft ones just don’t hold up the way I’ve always brushed. I decided the Oclean was going to help me solve that. When I applied too much pressure the LED on the end of the handle changes from white to red in addition to the voice. The way I was holding the brush hid the brush end from view, but it was also part of why I was applying too much pressure. I tried switching to a grip that was more like holding a pencil and found I was triggering the alert a lot less.

I don’t always have my phone nearby when I’m brushing my teeth, so it’s pretty cool to get that immediate result on the screen showing if you had a quadrant that didn’t get enough attention. It’s using AI to determine this based on angulation, gyroscopic information and speed. Overall, it feels pretty accurate.

I may have assumed it takes a quadrant approach, but after that 4th one it says “Next Area” then “Brush for 2 minutes”. That ends up being around 4 minutes, which is a really long time. I’ve always hit 2 minutes, and have added 30 seconds now in the front to wrap up.

As for volume, it’s pretty quiet which I’d guess has to do with the Mag-Lev vibration, and I like quiet. The voice also doesn’t transmit very far because of the bone conduction. It reminded me of a kids toothbrush we had a very long time ago called Tooth Tunes which played Rock & Roll All Nite by Kiss.

The other big thing is battery life. I did not need to recharge during the month that I spent reviewing the product. Pretty impressive and bodes well for traveling with it. You’ll obviously halve that if you’re sharing the handle with another user which the app does account for.

Final thoughts

I’m really happy with the Oclean X Ultra S Smart Sonic Toothbrush. It’s quiet, provides coaching on my brushing habits, has a killer battery life and has already helped my course correct years of brushing with too much pressure. We’ll have to see what my dentist has to say.
