REVIEW – In 2022, I reviewed the Ocoopa 10,000mAh hand warmer, and I fell in love with hand warmers! It was a wonderful gadget that I still use today when the weather turns cold. It even doubled as a power bank to charge my cellphone if I wanted.  But it was rather large in the hand, a bit bulky in the pants pocket, and you had to switch hands to keep both of your hands warm. So when the UT4 Urban hand warmers came out, I was intrigued because they were twin warmers, one for each hand.  Plus with a slightly cheaper price of $29.99 and compact size, I wanted to see how they stacked up to my original. (you’ll see some pics below that compare the size of the original I tested and these UT4 Urban warmers)  Let’s check it out!

Features and performance

The UT4 Urban hand warmers (hereinafter referred to as the ‘warmers’), are quite thin and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or any pocket. They also have magnets on one side so they gently stick together when you are storing them.  They come with a drawstring bag as well for storage, which is nice because the magnets aren’t terribly strong and they could easily fall apart and separate if you didn’t have the storage bag. On the end of each warmer is a silicone flap that covers the USB-C charging ports.

On the front, you’ll see the 1 button on each warmer that allows you to start them up and switch between the 3 heat levels.  There are also 3 LED lights above the button to show you a red light for each heat level you are on, and you can show blue lights for how much battery is left by double-clicking the button. And on the end of each warmer is a loop built into the edge of the warmer that allows you to use the lanyards that came with the product if you want.  The USB-C charging cable is also pretty cool.  On one end, it has a USB-A connection, and on the other end, it is split into 2 USB-C connections, so you can charge both hand warmers at the same time!

The warmers have an IP rating of IP45, which means they are protected from water jets from any angle.  So that means you can’t submerge these hand warmers in water, but you can safely use them around water and don’t need to fear that splashing water or dropping them in the snow is going to hurt them.

So how did they perform?  Well, Ocoopa says in their marketing that these warmers can last you 10-18 hours of use on a single charge.  I have no idea where that came from because I didn’t get anywhere near that performance, and I have been using them every day for about a month.  On the lowest heat level 1, I was able to squeak out around 6 hours of continuous use.  On level 2, I was able to get about 4.5 hours of continuous use.  And on level 3, I was able to get 3 hours of continuous use.

So does that mean I don’t like them?  On the contrary.  I really like these warmers and they perform for me as I would expect them to with the use cases that I experience most often.  I use these walking the dog a couple of times a day in cold weather.  I take them to my office and when my office gets drafty during the winter, I use them for 30 min or so to warm my hands back up.  I also used them when I recently went skiing.  I didn’t take them on the slopes with me because my ski gloves are heated, so I didn’t really need the warmers on the mountain.  I used them at night when I was walking around the town, going to dinner, riding the shuttle bus, etc.

These warmers are great for dropping into your pants or jacket pocket to keep the pocket warm and toasty.  You won’t even notice them because they are so compact.  But the heat they put out (up to 125 degrees) is wonderful, and it only takes them about 5 seconds to warm up.  In fact, I will say that the level 3 heat is simply too hot for me to hold in my bare hand. Level 2 heat is borderline too hot for me, and level 1 heat is just about right for my bare hand. (Kinda like the 3 bears in Goldilocks, eh?) I did experience a night at my ski trip that was about negative 5 degrees, so I put these warmers on level 3 and dropped them in my coat pockets.  My gloves weren’t quite warm enough by themselves to keep my hands warm in negative 5 degrees, but when I put my gloved hands in my pockets, it was great.

I should mention that unlike some of the larger Ocoopa hand warmers, like the larger 10,000mAh Ocoopa I tested in 2022, these smaller warmers can’t be used as a power bank. Also, on the side of the warmers that have the magnets to allow them to attach to each other, they don’t heat up.  So they only heat on the rounded front sides.  That means when you are holding them in each hand only 1 side of the warmer actually warms, so you can either warm your palm, or warm your fingers. Or you can fiddle with them like I do, and flip them over and over in your hand so both my palm and my fingers get warm.

Do I wish the warmers warmed up on both sides of the unit?  Of course. But if you want a warmer for each hand and the magnet feature to hold them together, you have to give up warming on both sides.   Do I wish the batteries lasted longer?  Sure, but the beauty of these warmers is the small, ergonomic size, so you have to give up a larger battery to get that. If you want longer use times then you can purchase any of the larger Ocoopa hand warmers, which as I mentioned are quite nice.

Final thoughts

If you have cold hands, then a set of hand warmers is going to be a great product for you.  The UT4 Urbans are great for those who want a small hand warmer that would fit inside a pocket or even inside a glove if needed. One of their biggest attractive qualities is the size.  But with a smaller size than some other Ocoopa hand warmers, you are getting a smaller battery.  That means that the UT4 Urbans don’t last as long as other hand warmers.  They did not last nearly as long as Ocoopa advertises, and in fact, for me, only lasted between 2 hrs and 5 hrs, depending on the heat level you choose. I use them for short periods of time outside during the cold weather, or periodically in the office during the day when the office gets drafty and my hands get cold.  It serves my purposes, and that’s fine for me. As long as you understand that, then the $29.99 price is a great price for what you are getting.

What I like about the

  • Easy portability and storage with the small size and the cloth bag
  • Smooth and easy to hold in your hands
  • Heats up fast!
  • Comes in many colors

What needs to be improved?

  • Keep the magnets, but have both sides of the warmers get warm! (I can dream, right?)
  • The advertised number of hours of use is grossly overstated
