REVIEW – One thing I love about reviewing gadgets is trying something that looks new or unique and seeing how it holds up. One that came up recently was the SoundPeats PearlClip Pro earbuds, which use a different mechanism to stay in your ear than any other earbud I’ve tried before. Essentially, it’s a ring that clips around your ear. The picture on the model looked a little odd, but I thought it would be fun to try. Read on to see how it’s doing!

Design and features
The design of these earbuds is very different from past earbuds I’ve reviewed. They don’t have an interchangeable tip that you can swap out and it doesn’t insert into your ear. They instead rest gently on your ear and are held in place by the clip that goes around to the back side of your ear. Each side of the clip has a rounded pearl shape to it, hence the Pearlclip moniker.
Setup
Setup of these earbuds is a pretty standard Bluetooth setup. Open the case and push and hold the button on the case until it blinks. Open Bluetooth search on your phone and it should pick it up pretty quickly. Connect and pair and away you go. Pretty simple.
Setting up the app is also pretty standard. Go to the Google Play or Apple App store, download and install. If you have already connected the earbuds to your phone, it’s pretty easy to search and connect in the app. I honestly didn’t get much from the app with these earbuds. You can tweak the EQ settings and make some tap adjustments, but I didn’t notice much difference. Though you can program different tap responses for the left and right earbuds in the app, it is very difficult to tell which one is left and which one is right when you’re putting them in your ears. There is no L or R marked on the earbuds, so you have to guess. Both fit in either ear.
Performance
I was pleasantly surprised by how these earbuds fit in my ears. They did not fit well in my wife’s and daughter’s ears, though. The pearl part of the earbud just was too big to sit comfortably for them.
I started using them for conference calls at work and I really enjoyed not having to wear a large headset. Connectivity was great and sound is good. After a few hours of wear I did start to get sore in one spot, but most earbuds and headphones start to wear a little after long without a break.
Final thoughts
Overall, I like these earbuds. They aren’t for everyone, as there are no options to size the earbuds to custom fit them to different size ears. They do look kind of like a large earring or gauge, but I like the look. There is no active noise cancellation, so if you’re looking for something to give you some quiet and isolation these aren’t going to be great. I like the open configuration where I can hear more of what’s going on around me at the office and in the house. In noisy environments I’m going to be pulling out the noise cancelling earbuds, though. These are a fun and different take on earbuds and I’m primarily going to be using these at the office for meetings and calls.
What I like about the SoundPeats PearlClip Pro Earbuds
- Comfortable fit for my ears
- Open air earbud type makes it easier to hear what’s going on around you
- Works great in conference calls
- Unique design and fit
What needs to be improved?
- Touch controls were not very responsive in testing
- They do not fit well if you have small ears
- It is very difficult to tell the right earbud from the left earbud. The only difference that I could tell was in which side the microphone is on and you have to look very closely to tell which is which. Given how they are designed, though, it doesn’t really matter that much
