Design and features

This set of tools has two tiers: one that can be carried independently or locked together and carried together. BlackZero also makes a third tier, sold separately, of connectors and fasteners. One tier is a cordless brushless electric drill set, and the other is a portable hand tool set.

The drill set includes a nice variety of bits and attachments. While I don’t always use every bit, you never know when the need will arise.

BlackZero2Tier 2

The included drill set is specifically imperial and small, but they will get done pretty much whatever you need to accomplish.

BlackZero2Tier 3

It’s difficult to see in a picture, but the electric drill has an electronic setting for the different weights you may need to select depending on if you’re driving screws or drilling. I’m not a huge fan of the touch controls and prefer a physical switch or dial.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

The only setup for this set was charging the cordless drill. I really the USB-C charging because I have multiple chargers in the house and I don’t have to carry around an independent and proprietary charger. The port is at the bottom of the drill and the battery is removable, but as of this review they do not sell additional batteries separately.

Performance

The real meat of this review comes in how well the tools perform. I got a piece of scrap lumber out and wanted to see how long the battery would last at drilling holes. I was not expecting much due to the smaller size. I was very mistaken. I drilled over 90 holes, put in and took out a lag bolt, and drove in and removed a number of screws, all on a single charge, before I gave up and ran out of room on my chunk of wood.

BlackZero2Tier 9

When I was done testing the drill out it still had a charge. It was getting low, but I could have gone on for a while longer. The BlackZero website claims it can drive 850 screws on a single charge. I didn’t have the time or patience to do that test, but it does not surprise me.

BlackZero2Tier 8

The hammer in the hand tool set was quite surprising as well. It’s not a heavy hammer, but for light work it works quite well. It also has a couple of nice features like a nail holder with magnet to start nails without smashing your fingers.

It fits a wide range of nails nicely.

Driving and removing nails was easy without any significant marring of the hammer head as well, so it’s a decently hard hammer.

Crescent wrench is a crescent wrench. Looks nice, but there’s not much innovation going on with your basic crescent wrenches.

BlackZero2Tier 14

The utility knife is great and cuts foam like a charm. Nice grip on the handle.

BlackZero2Tier 17

In addition to a full-size bit driver, there is a small bit driver, which I really liked. Sometimes you just need a small driver to get in tight places.

What I like about the BlackZero 2 Tier Toolkit

  • The portability and design of this toolkit is great.
  • The range of bits and attachments is great, especially for a multi-purpose toolkit
  • Materials are high quality and not just cheap fluff
  • The electric drill is surprisingly powerful and the battery lasts quite a while

What needs to be improved?

  • Price is a bit steep for a toolkit
  • Separately sold batteries. Kind of a nit because the included one does last quite a while
  • Physical switches on the drill instead on electronic touch controls

Final thoughts

BlackZero2Tier 4

I think this is a great, multipurpose toolkit. I really like the modularity and portability, and it really shows in the design that they put a lot of thought into the construction and selection of tools. That said, this would not be a good fit for a construction site, but I don’t think that’s their intended demographic. I was seriously impressed by how long the drill lasted on a single charge and think it would be great for projects around the house. My last multi-purpose toolkit is on its last legs, so this is a great replacement. I recommend the set and think it’s going to last me for quite a while.
