REVIEW – My two children ages 4 and 5 are very energetic and very creative. While my daughter is more into coloring and writing, my son is all about construction sets and building things according to his imagination. Regardless, they both enjoy any toys that stimulate their minds and creativity. The Gears Gizmos Building Set by Learning Resources looks like it would fit right into the activities that they love.
What is it
The Learning Resources Gears Gizmos Building Set includes a total of 83 pieces made up of springs, spirals, and a propeller, plus small, medium and large gears and bases. It allows kids to combine them any way they can imagine creating gear driven designs.
What’s in the box
83 x Pieces made up of springs, spirals, and a propeller, plus small, medium and large gears and bases
1 x Stickers
1 x Quick Start Guide
Design and features
The pieces that make up this building set are all plastic and snap together is create whatever design that you are imagining. The plastic is quite strong and seems like it can withstand enough use to last for a few years. Some of the parts are gears and others are building blocks that connect to the gears. There is also a propellor, a crank handle 2 spring connectors, etc.
Performance
The building set comes in a nice box that is attractive for kids. Once the parts are removed from the sealed plastic bags, you are ready to build. Although a user guide is included, this set is visually self-explanatory and my kids got started right away. I did help them with the first design just for them to understand how the pieces connect to each other. And, some of the fittings are tight so they needed my help to put some together or to take pieces apart. The following pictures show the first build, which is the one that I helped them to create.
All of the following designs were done by my kids without my help.
Important note:
What I like
- The quality of the parts
- The creativity it offers
- The simplicity
What I’d change
- For the number of pieces included, maybe some pieces that allow for more versatility
Final thoughts
My kids love this building set. The concept of the gears allows them to not just build things but adds movement to their final product. This keeps them engaged. While I do think that Learning resources could have included some other different pieces to allow for a wider range of designs, this is a good product and it gets two thumbs up!!
