Modern phones can run demanding games, record high-resolution video, and charge at increasingly high speeds, but all that performance creates the same old problem: heat. Once a phone gets hot enough, it may reduce performance to protect its components, and holding a hot device during a long gaming session is not particularly pleasant either.

Nubia’s answer is surprisingly inexpensive. Its new Ice Cream Cooler, also called the Magnetic Phone Cooler Neo, is a 25W thermoelectric phone cooler that attaches to the back of a smartphone.
The name comes from its off-white, speckled design, but the interesting part is not how much it resembles a frozen dessert. Nubia launched the accessory in China at an introductory price of 99 yuan, roughly $14 to $15; its regular price is 159 yuan, or about $24.
Phone heat matters beyond benchmarks
A flagship processor can produce impressive benchmark results, but peak numbers do not show what happens 30 or 60 minutes into a demanding game.
As internal temperatures rise, phones can reduce processor performance to manage heat. An external cooler is designed to draw heat from the phone’s back panel and exhaust it, potentially delaying that performance drop.
The Ice Cream Cooler uses a 36 x 36mm thermoelectric cooling plate, commonly called a TEC or Peltier cooler. Nubia pairs it with a cold-forged aluminum heatsink, aluminum heat-spreading plate, and fan. Nubia rates the accessory at up to 25W, so it is not a passive add-on; it requires external power while in use.
For gamers, the potential benefit is not simply making the phone feel cooler. Keeping thermal buildup under control could help a device sustain its performance during extended workloads.
That is the theory, anyway. The actual difference will depend on the phone, game, ambient temperature, mounting position, power source, and other conditions.
Nubia’s biggest cooling claims
This is where the distinction between manufacturer claims and independent evidence is especially important.
Nubia says the cooler can reach temperatures as low as -18°C and claims up to a 60°C temperature reduction under certain conditions. Those figures should not be interpreted as Nubia promising to turn a smartphone into a block of ice.
They are claims about the cooler’s thermal capability, not evidence that a phone’s processor or battery will operate at -18°C. Real-world results will depend on ambient temperature, contact between the accessory and the phone, workload, power input, and where the temperature is measured.
The more useful question is whether the accessory can reduce thermal buildup enough to help a phone maintain performance during a long gaming session. Independent testing will be needed to answer that.
A 6,000rpm fan exhausts heat
Moving heat from the phone into the cooler is only part of the job. That heat still has to go somewhere.
Nubia uses a seven-blade fan capable of spinning at up to 6,000rpm, with airflow exhausting from the top and bottom of the accessory. That design is intended to direct warm exhaust away from your hands when holding a phone horizontally. Nubia lists fan noise as low as 33dB at its lowest setting.
There are four operating modes: Silent, High Power, Overclocking, and Temperature Control. The temperature-control setting uses an internal chip to manage cooling automatically.
Better still, an app is not required to change them. Physical controls on the side handle the operating modes and the circular RGB lighting on the rear.
For an accessory intended to prevent overheating, not needing another account or companion app is a welcome touch.
Magnetic or clamp mounting
Magnetic attachment is the simplest way to use the cooler, but Nubia also includes clamp attachments for phones without built-in magnets or a magnetic-compatible case. That significantly broadens its usefulness, especially for Android owners whose phones do not support magnetic accessories natively.
The Ice Cream Cooler weighs about 90g and measures approximately 25mm thick, so adding it will turn a slim smartphone into a noticeably chunkier gaming setup. That is the tradeoff with this type of accessory. You are adding weight, a fan, and a power cable to solve a problem created partly by pushing a compact phone harder.
There is also a 1/4-inch mounting thread, making the cooler potentially useful beyond handheld gaming. It could be incorporated into a tripod or livestreaming setup, where extra bulk matters less and the phone may be working continuously for long periods.
A playful but restrained design
The name makes the Ice Cream Cooler sound like a novelty accessory, but its design is relatively restrained.
Its rounded-square body has an off-white finish with small speckles that create the ice-cream-inspired look. Circular RGB lighting on the rear can be adjusted or switched off with the physical controls.
It is playful without looking completely out of place on a normal smartphone.
Who should buy it?
Mobile gamers whose phones get hot during long sessions are the obvious audience. For casual browsing, video, and short gaming bursts, a 90g accessory that needs external power may be more hassle than it is worth.
It makes more sense for demanding games, extended recording, or livestreaming. At 99 yuan, the Ice Cream Cooler is an inexpensive way to try active phone cooling; even its 159-yuan regular price is modest for a 25W TEC cooler with magnetic and clamp mounting, four modes, physical controls, RGB lighting, and a tripod thread.

Just do not buy it for the sub-zero claim alone. What matters is whether it helps your phone sustain performance when gaming, filming, or handling another demanding workload. Availability outside China has not been announced.
