As always, Apple’s figures come from controlled testing. Real-world endurance will depend on listening volume, calls, ANC use, and other features, so the rated numbers are best treated as a comparison point rather than a promise.
5. Durability Moves From IP54 to IP57
One of the least flashy AirPods 5 changes may be one of the most useful over time. AirPods 4 and their cases carry an IP54 rating for dust, sweat, and water resistance, while AirPods 5 move to IP57.
Both ratings retain the same dust-protection digit, while the water-resistance digit rises from 4 to 7. That represents a substantially higher standardized level of protection against water exposure, even though it does not make AirPods 5 waterproof.
Apple still describes them as dust, sweat, and water resistant, so this should not be interpreted as permission to swim with them. The benefit is extra protection against the kinds of situations earbuds actually encounter, including workouts, rain, spills, and heavy sweating.
For a product that may spend several years moving between pockets, bags, gyms, and outdoor environments, improved durability could matter more in the long run than some software features that only get used occasionally.
Are AirPods 5 a Meaningful Upgrade?
AirPods 5 are not a radical redesign of Apple’s open-fit earbuds. They are a refinement of the direction Apple established with AirPods 4, with the most important changes focused on eliminating smaller compromises rather than introducing one dramatic new feature.
The standard model arguably benefits the most because ANC is no longer locked behind a higher price tier. Both versions also gain the revised acoustic architecture and IP57 resistance, while Apple is claiming significantly stronger noise reduction from the open-fit design.
At $149 in the U.S., AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case make the stronger case for buyers who care about convenience because they add volume swipe, wireless charging, and better ANC battery life. Those extras make the higher tier more complete, but they also mean some of the best AirPods 5 improvements are still not standard across the range.
If you already own AirPods 4 with ANC, the decision is less obvious. Better durability, improved controls on the higher model, and stronger claimed ANC are useful changes, but the actual size of the sound and noise-cancellation improvements still needs independent testing.
