The Huawei Mate 70 Air arrives with specs that make you double-check the math: 7-inch screen, 6,500mAh battery, all in a 6.6mm thin body. The device launched in China with pricing starting at ¥4199 (around $590), though there’s no word yet on global availability.

Thin phones usually sacrifice battery capacity to achieve their slim profiles, but Huawei went the opposite direction. The Mate 70 Air uses silicon-carbon battery technology that packs more capacity into less space, delivering flagship endurance without the bulk.

At 208 grams, it’s not exactly light, but that’s the trade-off for the massive battery inside. You’re getting two-day battery life in exchange for a phone that feels substantial in your hand.

The 7-inch LTPO OLED display runs at 120Hz with 1320 × 2760 resolution and peaks at 4000 nits brightness. That’s bright enough to handle direct sunlight without squinting. Huawei’s Kunlun Glass provides screen protection, and the aluminum-glass construction gets IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance. Color options include Gold and silver brocade, White feather robe, and Obsidian Black. Those first two names reflect Huawei’s tendency toward poetic descriptions for flagship finishes.

Processor choice depends on RAM configuration, with the 12GB RAM model using the Kirin 9020A processor and the 16GB RAM version getting the Kirin 9020B. Both are downclocked versions of the standard Kirin 9020, likely to manage heat and power efficiency in the thin chassis. That 6,500mAh battery charges at 66W wired speeds with 5W reverse wired charging for topping up accessories. Combine efficient processors with huge battery capacity and you’re looking at serious endurance, though real-world testing will confirm that.

The camera setup includes four rear sensors working together. A 50MP main camera with OIS and f/1.8 aperture handles most shots. A 12MP telephoto provides 3x optical zoom with a RYYB sensor for better low-light performance and its own OIS. An 8MP ultrawide covers the wide shots, while a 1.5MP multi-spectral color sensor helps with color accuracy and depth information. The front camera is 10.7MP for selfies and video calls. Huawei’s limited access to Google Mobile Services means the camera app and processing remain independent of Google’s computational photography ecosystem, but the hardware looks capable on paper.

HarmonyOS 5.1 runs the show with AI-powered features like AI Air Transfer for wireless file sharing and Tap-to-Share for quick content transfers. There’s AI face-swap detection for identifying manipulated photos or videos, plus stylus support built in for note-taking or creative work.

Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and USB Type-C 2.0. The phone includes BeiDou satellite messaging for emergency communications, though this feature is China-only at launch. An IR blaster lets you control TVs and other appliances. Security options include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and face recognition.

The Mate 70 Air is available now in China across four configurations, with pricing starting at ¥4199 (~$590) for 12GB/256GB, ¥4699 (~$660) for 12GB/512GB, ¥4699 (~$660) for 16GB/256GB, and ¥5199 (~$730) for 16GB/512GB. Global availability remains unannounced. Huawei’s limited presence in markets like the US and ongoing restrictions on Google Mobile Services make international launches uncertain for the company’s flagship devices.

The Mate 70 Air makes its case with straightforward engineering: massive battery capacity in a thin profile, paired with a large screen and capable cameras. Whether that combination matters depends on regional availability and your willingness to work without Google apps and services.
