Design and features
The YogiFi Smart Mat has been an adventure. I am not a flexible person, and have wanted to get into yoga, but have been too self-conscious to go to a class or gym. I do my best with different videos but never know if i am really doing what I should be.
This yoga mat looks and feels like a normal, high-quality mat. However, there are little sensors in the mat that talk to the app and tell you about the position you are in, and what needs to be improved. I also really like that there is a nice design on the top of this mat. It shows where the best placement for hands and feet should be.
The app that connects to the mat is easy to read and fun. There are some questions that are asked when you initially start to get an idea of where you are starting on your yoga journey, but then it takes you to the home page that has a variety of different classes available. There are different categories, such as stretching and flexibility, relaxation, morning wakeup, focus on certain body zones, and more. It also tells you how long each video is.
Each video has an instruction section and a warm up, but there is also a skip button for each portion. I did a couple videos in a row the other day and would skip the first couple of segments because I had already done those, and already felt warmed up. It was a nice, smooth transition from one to the next.
During the videos, you get to watch the instructor on the left side of your screen, and on the right side, it shows your mat and where the pressure is hitting. I didn’t realize how much I was supposed to keep my feet together, but after I was reminded over and over, I could tell a difference in the way I was moving and how my body was reacting. Super fun. The light on the mat changes color depending on how you’re positioned on the mat. Green means you’re doing it right, red is wrong. Orange means that you are almost there, but not quite right. The yellow light indicates that there is nothing on the mat. There is also someone coaching you through the process, but if you can’t get a certain pose correct after a couple of attempts, they politely tell you that “that’s alright, let’s move on”. I’m sure with time I can get the posture, but I almost wish that it would let me click to move on, or just keep trying over and over. I guess that’s what the other modes are for.
There is also a mode where you can do whatever you want on the mat. After doing a couple of salutations, I checked the app. It was awesome! It showed me a graph with my session summary. I am a visual person and love being able to see what progress looks like.
The most exciting thing about this mat and the ability to connect to my iPad, or other devices, is that it can be totally wireless. There is a battery indicator light next to the power button, and it lasts quite a while. I can go outside and enjoy the sunrise, sunset, or even the afternoon heat if my soul desires.
Final thoughts
I will gladly use the YogiFi Smart Mat yoga mat and be able to stay in the comfort of my home and not embarrass myself in front of anyone besides my family. I feel like I have the information that can help me to improve and have a better form. So, until I find a magic solution to weight loss, building strength and stability, or giving me more energy and motivation, I will stick to the flow of the Asana and salute the sun wherever I want.
