Design and features
I reviewed Ultimea’s Poseidon D80 Dolby Atmos surround sound bar in December 2024 (read it here) and thoroughly enjoy it. It gives crisp, clear sound that is leaps and bounds better than my TV’s anemic speakers. I liked it so much that when the Apollo S70 (reviewed here) premiered in April 2025, I was equally excited to let my ears feast again. Now they’ve introduced the Skywave F40 with Dolby Atmos, and I couldn’t wait to take a look.
It arrived in well-designed, recyclable packaging.
The system is powered by two wall-wart power supplies – one for the soundbar and the other for the surround speakers.
The soundbar splits into left and right parts for shipping. They twist together with an ingenious mechanism. Pins align with the opposite half and, when joined, form a sturdy union that provides the necessary electrical connections. Slick!
Buttons on the top, from left to right, power, input, Bluetooth, volume down, and volume up.
HDMI, optical, USB, power, subwoofer, and power connectors reside in a recess at the back of the soundbar. I love that Ultimea packages HDMI and optical cables in the box. A 90° HDMI adapter helps to keep the cords neat and the speaker bar more snugly to the wall.
For most, the remote serves as the primary control source. It’s similar to previous iterations and is comfortable to use. Batteries not included.
Most of the buttons are self-explanatory. Under the treble control buttons are equalizer settings for “movie,” “music,” “voice,” “sport,” “game,” and night. I preferred “movie” mode. The “night” button dims the display and cuts the bass.
The “Xupmix” button activates enhancements to the surround sound and adds a boatload of punchiness. Nice!.
The surround sound speakers are tiny and are pre-paired to the soundbar.
Each speaker has a single RCA connector that passes the audio signal from the right to the left speaker. I appreciate that only a single wire passes between them, making the wiring easier and reducing clutter. The bottom of the right surround speaker also houses the power connector.
If you want to mount the soundbar or speakers on the wall, brackets and screws make the job easy.
The subwoofer is wired and connects to an RCA jack on the back of the soundbar.
Setting the system up took just a few minutes.
Ultimea recommends connecting the F40 to their app and performing a software update, which took about 15 minutes. The app makes changing settings easy.
Audio is 5.2.1, meaning the F40 features five main speakers (left, right, center, rear left, and rear right), plus two upward-firing speakers, and one subwoofer. My wife and I sat down to watch a movie and listen to a few of our favorite songs. We were very pleased with the sound quality. The bass was punchy without being rattly or muddy. The treble and vocal tones were crisp and well-defined. The surround sound was exceptional, impressive for such small speakers, and packs a serious wallop for $300. Excellent job, Ultimea!
Final thoughts
For $300, the Ultimea Skywave F40 Dolby Atmos speaker system packs an excellent acoustic punch. Setting up is extremely easy; everything needed is in the box, and the sound quality is delightful. Thank you and brilliant job, Ultimea!
What I like about the Ultimea Skywave F40 Dolby Atmos soundbar
- Outstanding sound from such small speakers!
- Assembles quickly
- Easy to use
- The single wire between the surround speakers reduces clutter
What needs to be improved?
- A backlit remote would be a great addition.
- Making the subwoofer wireless would be a plus.
