REVIEW – While I can’t get enough of a good robot vacuum cleaner, you really can’t get away without a cordless stick vacuum. Sometimes, you just need something for quick pickups or to vacuum the car mats or other upholstery. When the last stick vacuum I reviewed gave up the ghost, I asked for the chance to review the Klarpul. It’s a surprisingly powerful vacuum that is easy to maneuver.

Design and features
The Klarpul stick vacuum has some neat features that made me excited to review it. It’s fairly lightweight and it has an adjustable aluminum stick body that makes it particularly easy to use if you’re tall or if you are trying to vacuum places that require a little extra reach. It has a sleek look that blends in with my white wall where I mounted it, and it has a pretty good battery life at 60 minutes, although that is only when you vacuum in “eco” mode. Still, I typically only use stick vacs for small jobs, so that suits me fine. When I want to vacuum the whole house, I fire up the robot vacuum.
The first test I put the Klarpul to was cleaning up after I installed the rack it sits on. I had to do a little drilling, and it made a bit of a mess on the floor. After it charged up (which it can do in 2.5 hours from empty), I made quick work of that cleanup using the combined upholstery-crevice nozzle. This is kind of neat because you don’t need to change tools if you want to switch between those functions. The upholstery brush just slides down over the crevice tool.
My next test for the Klarpul was one that seems to be quite difficult for all vacuums: cleaning my car floor mats. Those loops in the pile really hold on to the leaves and sticks that I track into my car. I used the crevice tool and sort of scraped it along the pile since I knew the mats would really hold on to the dirt. I have some before and after photos, and while the Klarpul didn’t get every little thing, I think it did do the best job of any of my vacuum cleaners. I was impressed!

Now, I should at this point fess up to the fact that I didn’t use the “eco” mode for any of the messes I cleaned up with the Klarpul over the course of the last few weeks. I have hard floors, and while “eco” mode seems like the greener choice, my floors have crevices that require an insane amount of suction from which to pull debris. I automatically cranked it up to “boost” mode, which is the highest setting. Boost is what I pretty much always use, but again, I use it for the occasional mess, not for the whole house. To change the setting, there is a touch screen that you can also consult for battery life and error alerts as well as what setting you are using.
For fun (and in the name of science), I decided to try out “eco” mode, “medium” mode, and “boost” mode on the Klarpul with a little glitter. As we all know, glitter is the herpes of the craft world. Glitter spills are the worst! I was shocked to find that all three settings were able to pick up glitter out of the crevices in my floor, and it didn’t spread it around in the process like some other vacuums I’ve had.

Glitter is lightweight, so I experimented with other messes to see if I could see a difference between the power levels. I ground up some almonds to see how it would handle the combination of larger, heavier chunks along with finer grinded nuts. You could see that all three power levels did a good job, but I it did kick one almond chunk across the room and it didn’t want to collect the occasional chunk. Eventually, I got all the almonds up, but on the lowest level, it left a tiny bit of almonds in my floor crevices.

One thing I really like about the Klarpul is that it has a 5-stage filter system that captures dust, and a HEPA filter is supposed to eliminate the allergens. It’s easy to clean most of these filters because they all come apart, and Klarpul sends an extra HEPA filter along as well.
There is one thing that I wish Klarpul had thought about a little more and that’s the cord situation. The Klarpul has a removable battery, so you can really charge it anywhere. That part is nice if you have a closet where you hide your vacuum, but it doesn’t have power. However, my vacuum lives right above a power outlet, so the black cord either falls on the floor when the vacuum is in use, or I have to dangle it over the mounting hardware. If the cord and power supply was white, it would blend in better with most walls, and I think they should have included a cord keeper or some crevice in the housing so it isn’t flopping around when not charging.
Something that I’ve started looking at when I review an item is whether there is a replacement battery available, since that is the part that wears out in my experience. The battery is removable, and I did find a replacement battery available from Klarpul on Amazon. It’s a whopping $69.99, but it’s cheaper than buying a whole new vacuum. Perhaps some competitors will pop up and lower that price. As a consumer, I want to have the option to repair a product when it wears out, not just chuck it in a landfill. I feel better that Klarpul feels the same way.
Final thoughts
I was really surprised by how effective even the lowest setting on the Klarpul was!
