REVIEW – For years my wife and I have used the sound of the bathroom fan to fall asleep to every night. As many of you can probably attest to, getting good quality sleep is hard enough these days, so anything we can do to help us get to sleep and stay asleep is worth trying. And the constant sound of the bathroom fan drowns out those annoying sounds in the middle of the night that can wake you up, like the dog scratching the floor or the neighbor’s kid revving his engine late at night. But it’s almost impossible to get the same thing while you are traveling. Hotels rarely have any kind of bathroom fan, and if they do the fan is so quiet you can’t hear it. I reviewed a sound machine a couple of years ago, and it has been a life saver while traveling. But that sound machine was only a sound a machine. Wouldn’t it be great to have a sound machine that was also an alarm clock? The $25.99 Buffbee Sound Machine and Alarm Clock does just that, so let’s check it out.

Design and features
On the top of the Buffbee Sound Machine, you’ll see the speaker, surrounded by various buttons that do various things like change the sounds, set the clock, adjust the night light, and so on. On the back, you’ll see the power jack and the display dimmer. What’s cool about the dimmer is that you can turn the light all the way down so that the clock face is completely off. I don’t like sleeping with a clock, so that’s great for me. I also don’t like light, so I don’t use the night light. But if that’s not for you, there are 7 colors to choose from. On the bottom, you’ll find a small door that you can open to reveal a small disc-type battery (a CR2032) that only serves the purpose of maintaining the clock time when you unplug the sound machine from the wall. That battery does not allow you to use the Buffbee without the power cord, which would be nice, but the Buffbee doesn’t have a rechargeable battery.
The sounds you can choose from are varied, with the standard choices of various white noises, fans, and nature sounds like a bubbling brook, a thunderstorm, a campfire, and more. I prefer a simple sound, like a fan noise, so that’s what I use. The Buffbee has a 5W speaker, which is sufficient to provide plenty of sound for you, especially in a quiet room at night. And the Buffbee is really light, under 1 lb, so it’s really easy to take with you wherever you go. There is also a sleep timer with 5 different time periods, which is great for those who want to use the sound machine to fall asleep but don’t want it to run all night. As for me, I like it to run all night!
Final thoughts
For a price under $30 , the Buffbee is a great device to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. And it’s portable enough to take with you when you travel. The alarm clock features are also handy, but since you can turn off the display and you don’t have to use the night light, you don’t have to use the clock. Everyone should be able to find a sound that they prefer, but I imagine it couldn’t be that much more expensive to offer more than 18 sounds to choose from. For me, I have my favorite sound to use (one of the fan noises) and the speaker is plenty loud enough to work for me, especially when I travel, and it goes with me on every trip.
What I like about the Buffbee sound machine and alarm clock
- 18 sounds to choose from
- Alarm clock features like snooze, sleep timers, and night lights
- Small and portable
- Backup battery to maintain the clock time
What needs to be improved?
- The buttons could be easier to feel in the dark
- No rechargeable battery
- Perhaps a larger collection of sounds
