Design and features
Included is a storage case that opens with origami style.
A storage bag and cleaning cloth keep the glasses spiffy when they aren’t balancing on your nose.
Despite the heavy appearance of the Gunnar Optics Enigma Onyx frames, they are remarkably lightweight at 35 grams, even with my ponderous prescription. I’m happy to report they are comfortable and fit securely.
When deployed, the temple hinges feel very secure with very little play. They are not spring hinges, but the mechanisms are large and should hold up well.
Above my ears, I found the temples of the Gunnar Optiks Enigma Onyx glasses held quite tightly. I appreciate that they aren’t going to slide down my nose or fly into the abyss on the most vigorous of roller coasters. A+ in my book.
If the frame style doesn’t float your boat, Gunner offers multiple different styles.
Statistics indicate up to 75% of the world’s population uses some form of vision correction. As one of those billions, I value my peepers. My prescription is on the challenging side – I’m nearsighted with six degrees of prism. Without my glasses, I’m incapacitated and see double. I’ve dealt with my share of poorly made lenses mean that result in crappy cinema visits, scads of scratches, and horrible headaches. Thankfully, Gunnar’s lens quality is top-notch, with a wide focus area, particularly impressive with my progressive and prism prescription. I’ve ordered glasses from large and small optometrists, nationwide chains, and even bought them overseas, and can attest that Gunnar’s lenses are among the best I’ve had. Great job!
Gunnnar’s logo appears in the upper left lens but does not affect my field of vision.
Gunnar markets the Enigma glasses with yellow tinted lenses for computer and gaming and do make my eyes feel less fatigued while I work on the computer and phone.
I wore them while driving and found the blue-blocking tint made the passing scenery look bright and crisp without needing to squit. I found adapting to the lens color unproblematic.
Here’s a comparison with my previous glasses.
- Tight but comfortable fit
- Outstanding quality optics, even with my tough prescription
- Amber lenses filter blue light very well
What I’d change
- Maybe offer a polarized version?
Final thoughts
Overall, I’m very impressed with Gunnar Optiks Enigma glasses and frames. The frames are comfortable and strong and the lens quality is impeccable. I was initially skeptical of the veracity of the yellow lenses, but after wearing them for a while, I’m sold – they effectively reduce eye fatigue, sharpen image clarity, and make me feel more relaxed while poking the keyboard, driving, and late-night Netflix. Exemplary job, Gunnar Optiks, and thank you!
Price: $64.99 without prescription. $214.99 with prescription lenses. $314.99 for progressive or progressive/computer (reading) lenses
