NEWS – I love gears. Watching them move and seeing how they work together has always fascinated me. So, when I saw the MANN MAGNETS Gears Toys for Kids on Amazon, I thought, “Wow, I would have loved getting this as a kid!” These magnetic gears are made of wood and each has a strong magnet on the back. This is a set of eight gears that vary in size and can be put together in all kinds of ways.
It doesn’t come with a magnetic sheet to place them on, but Amazon reviewers have said they work best on a horizontal surface like a cookie sheet, although some have placed them on their refrigerators. If you want them to spin, you need to rotate a gear using your finger on the teeth of the gear, not the center knob (it tends to unscrew if you try to spin it and can be a choking hazard). One Amazon customer spray-painted his gears with metallic colors to give them a steampunk look – so cool!

Seems a tiny, carefully placed drop of wood glue on the knobs would solve the unscrewing problem.
