The KeyBiner is an active Kickstarter project that has exceeded its funding goal by more than 6000%, and it still has 17 days to go in the funding period. It seems everybody wants one of these carabiners with a tool kit (1/8″- 3/16″ – 1/4″ – 5/16″ – 3/8″ 10mm wrenches; screw bit driver; and flat blade screw driver/pry bar/file). It also comes with various sized screws and hardware so you can custom fit the key retention bar to hold as many keys as you need (up to 14, depending on size and orientation). There’s even an optional 32GB flash drive that you can add to the KeyBiner. Pledge $35 for an aluminum KeyBiner with the tools and key retention hardware; a pledge of $51 is required to add a flash drive to the aluminum KeyBiner. Higher pledge levels get you a copper or titanium KeyBiner. The funding period continues through .
This carabiner has a tool kit and a key retainer built in

We LOVE these kinds of EDC items and can’t get enough of them. However, it is hard to see how this is not a $10 impulse-buy item one picks up at the checkout line at the local MicroCenter/BestBuy/Fry’s???
After all, it is a piece of machined aluminum…or are we missing something???
You know….like this Chinese one:

Or go even lower profile with this $4 unit:

You linked to the same product twice.
Yeah…no edit/delete ability in the comments 🙂
Well, the Chinese one doesn’t have the built-in key retainer. Not saying that makes it worth any particular price point, but the Kickstarter one is more customizable.
Actually…here is the $4 one with the key retainer:

That’s a cover for a single key, not a key retainer. If you look at the photo of the KeyBiner, you can see where it holds keys inside it, rather like a pocket knife holds blades.
The point really is that these type of items are readily available via overseas suppliers. Those same suppliers can custom-make pretty much any configurations… even for low volume runs.
So we are always fascinated that there are KS projects which have huge oversubscribed backers for items that are actually already available and at a less expensive price point.
Because its made in china and the keybiner is made in the usa. Also the item you link is a knock off of another kickstarter carabiner.

We really wish we could agree that they were good reasons to pay more…
Sometimes the extra money you spend on a Kickstarter project is paid back to you as entertainment as you watch the drama involved in bringing something from an idea to reality. And then you receive it and realize it’s not always that good.
Ha! That IS true 🙂
