As of today, the comment system that was only implemented for the gear diary posts, will now be operational for reviews and articles. Posting via the VBBS forums will be turned off later today. Everyone will still be able to see old posts in the forum area, but they will become view only. All new replies will be done through the new comment system.
Why did we decide to ‘dump’ VBBS and go with a home brew solution? One big reason is that it should not be as susceptible to spam. I’ve been deleting 20-30 spam posts a day in the forums and that can get pretty monotonous after awhile. Another reason is that for the most part, the gadgeteer forums have not been a chit-chat area. They’ve always been just for people to post their comments on each article or review. Now all that information can remain with the review instead going out to another ‘system’.
Each thread can now be subscribed to as a single RSS feed (link at the bottom of each review). A full comment RSS feed is also available.
Of course, to post comments, you need a gadgeteer account. Your VBBS id/password will not work. Make sure you create an account if you haven’t already done so.

I’d also like to add that now that the comment system is site-wide, there will likely be more features added to it and to the user account system. (Much-needed expansion of user profiles, password changing, and the like are next, by the way.) Feel free to make suggestions or comment on what we have so far, and also know that I already have a lot of ideas of things to add in the future…
