REVIEW – Eye massagers aren’t for everyone, but as readers know, I’m a huge fan of sleep masks. I also suffer from migraines, so I wondered if an eye massager would be my cup of tea and maybe help with my headaches.  The Bob and Brad EyeOasis 2 combines several things I like: a light blocking mask that is easy to clean, along with Bluetooth capability that lets me listen to music or podcasts.  It also has features that should be pleasant: heat and massage.  I tried it, and I’ll tell you what I discovered about the Bob and Brad EyeOasis 2.

Design and features

For those who aren’t familiar with physical therapists Bob Schrupp and Brad Heineck, these guys have a popular Youtube channel and a number of wellness products they endorse and sell.  The idea that physical therapists developed this mask is what motivated me to try the Eye Oasis2, because I thought it might have some different bells and whistles compared to others on the market.  In fact, this mask has similar features to others on the market, but it has much more customization than I’m used to seeing.  You can basically turn on and off every feature and use them in combination, so if something isn’t for you (for example, you like the heat and the massage, but not the music) you can turn off whatever bothers you.

TheEyeOasis 2 also has two heat settings, three levels of compression and you can turn off the heat and use it with the included gel mask (which they encourage you to put in the freezer or refrigerator) to have cold therapy.  Massage combines both acupressure kneading and compression that is designed to relax you or ease headache pain.  This particular mask is supposed to be 30% quieter than others on the market.  If you don’t want to listen to your own music, there are several selections that are built in, including piano, soft rain, a meditation soundtrack and running water.

You can’t see it in the photos, but there is a tactile quality to the buttons that make it fairly easy to adjust the mask while you’re wearing it, and a voice confirms the settings so you know if you pushed the right one.

Performance

I charged up the EyeOasis 2 and put it on for my first eye massage.  I used it in the most basic mode, which combines some meditative music,  massage and heat on the lower setting.  My first impression was that the EyeOasis 2 is a bit heavy at 1.7 lbs, however, it didn’t fall off my head when I wasn’t lying down, nor was it uncomfortable.  I tried the EyeOasis 2 at my desk, so I tipped my head back and tried to imagine if this would be something I could use at work.  I think I could take a 15-minute wellness break and give myself a little spa experience right in my office, which sounds nice, but I’d have to make sure no sneaks up on me.  The EyeOasis 2 a “doors closed” gadget because you really can’t see anything with the mask on.

I really liked the heat and the temple compression when I was using the EyeOasis 2.  There are a variety of massage patterns it uses in a cycle, and some were more pleasant to me than others. The temple compression on the highest setting made the mask feel like it was hugging my face and I didn’t even need the head strap, to give you an idea of the amount of compression it uses.  I liked it more than some of the others, but I see the value of all of them.  The heat was very pleasant on both settings, and I could imagine using the mask just for that alone.

I also enjoyed the gel mask with the massage.  I think it would be really nice if I had a headache, but I do wish I could toss the gel mask into the washing machine.  It didn’t come with any cleaning instructions, but I think it might be a hand wash item.  The EyeOasis 2 by itself has a soft faux leather panel inside that wipes clean, which is even more convenient.

I found the EyeOasis 2 in massage mode to be a bit loud.   It was fairly easy for me to tune it out since it’s just mechanical sounds of the mask inflating and deflating as it compresses. It is supposed to be quieter than others on the market at 45dB, which is the sound of a quiet refrigerator or an average library.  That seems pretty quiet, but it’s on your face generating that noise so you definitely hear it, loud and clear.   If you are someone who has trouble ignoring noises, this might not be for you.

What isn’t loud and clear are the speakers on the EyeOasis 2, which make everything a bit muddy or tinny.  They are also not private — anyone around you can hear whatever you are hearing.  I tried the mask out with my own music as well as theirs.  I am not too picky about sound quality, but I’ve heard better sound out of a $5 bluetooth speaker.  Still, I think most people buy these masks for the massage, not for the speaker.  If it really bothers you, I think you could use earbuds and turn off the mask’s sound.  There are plenty of YouTube channels of babbling brooks and rainfall and meditative music, so you don’t really need that from the mask.

The battery life seemed good. The EyeOasis 2 turns itself off after a 15-minute cycle and I used it about six times with everything set on high before I was out of battery.  When I first started using the mask, there was a very strong vinyl scent that disappeared the more I used it.

Final thoughts

BobandBrad 6
If you are in the market for an eye massager, the Bob and Brad EyeOasis 2 Eye Massager might be for you.  It combines a number of features that you might find pleasant, such as heat and cold therapy along with massage.   If you are looking for a great sound experience as well, I’d use this with some earbuds.

What I like about the Bob and Brad EyeOasis 2 Eye Massager

  • Heat felt great.
  • Cold felt great.
  • Didn’t feel too heavy even when using upright.

What needs to be improved?

  • The speaker quality on the EyeOasis 2 was disappointing
  • It’s still fairly noisy
