REVIEW – When I was a kid, there was one blanket in the house that was coveted by everyone.  It was baby blue, had a pretty open weave, and was made of some synthetic fabric that made it both soft and lightweight.  But the best feature was this probably polyester trim that went around the outside of the blanket.  We called it “slicky” and it just felt “nice.” It was cool to the touch and kinda slippery.  Now imagine an entire blanket made out of that material.  That’s the Luxear Arc-Chill Cooling Comforter.  But does it keep you cool?  Maybe…

What is it?

The Luxear Arc-Chill Cooling Comforter is a quality quilted comforter that’s lightweight and claims to be able to move heat away from your body, thus keeping you cool.

Design and features

The Luxear Arc-Chill Cooling Comforter is a high quality lightweight blanket that claims to be able to keep you cool.  It has two sides; one for summer, when you want to be cool, and one for colder weather when you want to be kept warm.  If you are someone who sleeps warm but likes to have a blanket, this might be just the thing.  The “winter” side is a soft high quality cotton fabric, and the insulation is a lightweight breathable and well-quilted Dupont Dacron polyester. It’s the shell on the “cooling” side where the magic happens.  According to the product description, this is made of “Japanese Q-Max >0.5 Arc-Chill Cooling Fibers.”  It’s polyester but may be made in some fancy way.

Performance

As someone who was trained as an engineer and understands the basic principles of thermodynamics, it’s unclear how any insulation can keep you cool unless the outside air is warmer than you are (yuck).  But cooling blankets do seem to provide some effect, and they do so by working to move heat and moisture away from your body.  You’d sleep cooler with nothing covering you, but if you like to have something over you when you sleep, a cooling blanket might help keep you from overheating. Most fabrics do this to some extent, but Luxear has chosen a specific fabric that does it particularly well.  But there is one big caveat to making this work – the fabric has to be right against your skin.  That means no sheet, and no PJs.  This is a family website so I don’t want to get too risqué, but that’s the trick.  And does it work?  Well, once we figured out how to use it (see the risqué part above), yes.  It does work. It doesn’t work miracles, because you still have a blanket on, but it does let you sleep with a blanket in warmer conditions.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way, what about the normal blanket stuff?  It’s really nice.  The Luxear Arc-Chill Cooling Comforter’s stitching is well done and consistent, the trim is sewn straight and looks good, the quilting is even, and the fabrics feel high quality.

What I like

  • Lets us use a blanket in warmer conditions
  • High quality materials
  • Well constructed
  • Machine washable

What I’d change

  • Nothing

Final thoughts

If you like to sleep with a blanket even in warmer conditions, but don’t want to crank the AC to 63 degrees, the Luxear Arc-Chill Cooling Comforter is worth a try.  Even if the cooling effects don’t work for you, it’s a really nice summer weight blanket that is well constructed and should last years.
