Here’s a new one for me.  This low-heat LED lightbulb from the MoMA Store becomes an emergency flashlight when you need one.  It screws into a standard socket, and it produces as much light as a 40W bulb using only 6W of electricity.  The LEDs will produces up to 60,000 hours of light.  When you need a flashlight, all you need to do is unscrew the bulb, extend the bulb’s “neck”, and use the its switch to power it on as a flashlight.  The flashlight’s battery is charged while it’s screwed into the lamp socket, but I don’t see any information about the type of the battery or its power.  The Bulb Flashlight is available exclusively at the MoMA Store for $45.00; members get a 10% discount on purchases.

  2. I’d be a little wary about handling a bare bulb as a flashlight. Unless it has a protective coating of some kind to keep the broken glass contained in case you hit something or drop it.

  3. @Norm This is an LED bulb, not a traditional glass bulb with a filament. It’s plastic with LEDs in place of the filament.

  4. How about some technical specs? It’s only sold at the MoMA store, with no manufacturer name or technical specs provided. How bright is it on the battery? How often do you have to replace the built-in rechargeable battery and how expensive is it? Is it even replaceable? Is the beam narrow or wide-spread? Why would anyone buy one without knowing the answers to these questions?

  5. @Chris Zito This is a news item about a product I found for sale at MoMA and thought might interest our readers. I haven’t seen one of these, so I don’t know any specs other than what is shown at the MoMA site.
