Huawei’s FreeBuds Neo combines swipe volume controls, an 11mm dynamic driver and compact earbuds at a RMB 699 (about US$104) China reference price. Stem controls handle volume, track changes and noise-cancellation modes.

I took the FreeBuds Neo on a flight from Dallas to London, where they stayed comfortable through hours of listening and reduced the cabin rumble enough that I could watch a movie without constantly adjusting the volume. My full Huawei FreeBuds Neo hands-on review covers the fit, sound, calls and travel experience.

The earbuds weigh about 4.8g each with medium tips fitted. Their case weighs approximately 31.4g empty and measures 68.35 by 41.22 by 25.57mm. Silver, pink, white and black versions appear in Huawei's China lineup.

Price: RMB 699 (about US$104) China reference price; selected pink version displayed RMB 669 (about US$100) on October 1. Where to buy: Check FreeBuds Neo at Huawei VMall. Confirm the selected color, current offer and shipping destination.

Swipe controls and four tip sizes

Huawei says ear-shape data and fit simulations informed the design. Four ear-tip sizes are included, from extra-small to large.

A double tap handles playback and calls, a triple tap skips forward, and a swipe changes volume. Holding a stem changes noise-control modes or rejects calls. Several assignments can be customized.

Two-device connection and watch controls

FreeBuds Neo connects simultaneously to two Android, iOS or Windows devices. Huawei’s broader multi-device connection and audio switching require compatible HarmonyOS 3.0-or-later devices.

Compatible Huawei watches add another control surface, with battery checks, noise-mode changes and earbud finding. During supported workout announcements, the earbuds can lower music volume so the spoken update is easier to hear. Huawei says this integration requires earbud and watch updates plus current Audio Connect and Health apps.

Huawei’s watch-support guidance identifies a workout-announcement volume-slider issue. Phone volume buttons or earbud swipes provide the workaround while Huawei prepares a fix.

Battery life changes with the audio settings

With noise cancellation off, Huawei rates the earbuds for up to ten hours of music, or forty hours including case recharges. Switching ANC on reduces those standard-quality figures to 6.5 and 24 hours. In the higher-quality music setting, the corresponding figures are nine and 33 hours with ANC off, or six and 22 hours with it on.

The case charges through USB-C and has no wireless charging. Huawei rates earbud recharging at about 45 minutes and empty-case recharging at 70 minutes. IP55 protection applies to the earbuds; the case is unrated.

Bluetooth 6.0 supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and Huawei’s L2HC 4.0 codec. L2HC 4.0 requires a compatible Huawei phone or tablet running HarmonyOS 4.0 or later. The advertised 2.3Mbps lossless mode depends on supported hardware and software. Audio Connect provides spatial rendering on Android and iOS; Huawei’s high-definition mode requires supported HarmonyOS hardware. Both offer fixed and head-tracked presentation.

Each earbud has three silicon microphones and a bone-conduction pickup microphone. Huawei says adaptive processing improves voice clarity in noisy surroundings.

Price: RMB 699 (about US$104) China reference price; selected pink version displayed RMB 669 (about US$100) on October 1. Where to buy: Check FreeBuds Neo at Huawei VMall. Confirm the selected color, current offer and shipping destination.
