Adding a streaming stick to an older television is supposed to make the TV simpler to use. Instead, it can leave you with another small mess behind the screen: an HDMI connection, a power adapter, a cable running to an outlet, and another remote on the coffee table.

Amazon’s new Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) tackles the installation problem with Direct Power. Using the included cable, the stick can draw power from a compatible TV’s USB port, potentially eliminating the separate wall adapter and the cable running to an outlet.

It is a practical change for a device designed to disappear behind your television. But the 2026 model also changes the software underneath, so a cleaner setup is not the only thing to consider before buying.

    Direct Power makes installation cleaner

A conventional streaming-stick setup uses two connections: HDMI for the picture and a power cable running to a wall adapter. That second connection can be particularly awkward if your TV is wall-mounted and the nearest outlet is below the display.

Direct Power lets the Fire TV Stick 4K use the TV’s USB port instead. There is still a cable between the stick and the television, but you may be able to keep both connections out of sight behind the screen rather than routing power down the wall.

Check your TV’s USB power capability before counting on that setup. The appeal is losing the separate adapter, not a guarantee that every USB-equipped television will power the stick in the same way.

    This is the 2026 model

Amazon’s Fire TV names can make it easy to pick the wrong device. This is the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen), released in 2026, not the separate Fire TV Stick 4K Select.

The new model runs on a quad-core processor at up to 1.7GHz, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Those figures are less important to most buyers than the everyday result: a current Fire TV streaming experience in a small device that can be tucked behind a TV.

Amazon also redesigned the included Fire TV Remote. Its asymmetric shape is intended to make it easier to hold the right way around, while differently shaped and textured buttons help you find common controls by touch. A customizable star button can open a favorite app or a selected setting.

Wi-Fi 6 is useful, but not new

The Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) supports Wi-Fi 6. That can be useful in a busy home with many connected devices, provided you have a compatible router.

It is not, however, a reason on its own to replace the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K: that model already supported Wi-Fi 6. Your router, signal strength, internet connection, and streaming service will still have a bigger say in how reliably a show plays than the name of the wireless standard alone.

If your current stick streams smoothly, Wi-Fi 6 should not be treated as a headline upgrade here. Direct Power and the redesigned remote are clearer day-to-day differences.

Check the HDR formats you use

The new stick supports 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, along with HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. What you actually see will depend on your television, the content, your streaming subscription, and your connection.

There is an important caveat for home-theater buyers: Amazon does not list Dolby Vision support for this model. The 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K does support Dolby Vision. If that format matters to your setup, do not assume the newer stick is an upgrade in every respect.

That distinction matters less if your main goal is to give an older 4K TV a current streaming interface. It matters a great deal if you are replacing a working Fire TV device specifically to preserve particular picture features.

Vega OS changes the app question

The 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K runs Vega OS 2.0 rather than the Android-derived Fire OS used by the 2023 model. Amazon says Vega OS supports major streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, and Prime Video, and that it has added more apps over the past year.

For someone who opens a mainstream streaming app and presses play, the operating system may stay largely in the background. For someone who uses sideloaded software or less-common apps on an older Fire TV Stick, it deserves attention.

Check that your must-have apps are available on Vega OS before switching. The new model also has 1GB of RAM versus the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K’s 2GB, so this should not be viewed as a straightforward specifications upgrade.

    Who should buy it?

At its regular U.S. price of $59.99, the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) makes the most sense for someone with a good 4K television but frustrating built-in software, especially if the TV is wall-mounted and another cable running to an outlet would be a nuisance.

Owners of a recent Fire TV Stick have less reason to rush. If yours already streams smoothly, supports the apps and HDR formats you use, and its power cable is not a problem, a tidier installation may not justify replacing it.

The new stick’s best idea is refreshingly simple: with a suitable TV USB port, it can make a streaming device easier to install and easier to hide. Check the power setup and your essential apps first, and it could be a useful way to give an older TV a cleaner, more current streaming setup.
