AI assistants are becoming capable of doing more than answering questions, but reaching them still usually means pulling out a phone, opening an app, or sitting in front of a computer. Meta thinks its new Muse assistant may eventually deserve its own piece of hardware.
At Meta Connect 2026, Mark Zuckerberg revealed Muse Charm, a pocket-sized device designed specifically for interacting with Muse. The prototype has a small screen for an animated Muse avatar, fits in a pocket, and can attach to a keychain. Meta says it combines Muse with its new real-time voice technology, giving users another way to reach the agent without opening an app first.
The idea is easy to understand. Whether people need a separate AI gadget when Muse already works on phones, the web, WhatsApp, and Mac is the much harder question.
Muse Charm Is Basically a Shortcut to Muse
The prototype looks more like a digital charm than a phone or smartwatch. Its small screen displays a Muse avatar, and Zuckerberg showed a fingerprint sensor in the corner that users can tap to start a conversation.
The goal is faster access to an AI agent without finding, unlocking, and opening an app on a phone.
Meta has not confirmed the Charm’s battery life, dimensions, connectivity, price, or materials. Zuckerberg also said the company was still finalizing the internal layout, so the device shown at Connect remains prototype hardware rather than a finished product.
The Important Part Is Muse, Not the Charm
Muse Charm only makes sense if Muse itself becomes something people want to use throughout the day.
Meta launched Muse earlier in September as what it calls a personal AI agent. Rather than simply generating answers, Muse is designed to take actions across connected services. Meta says it can work with email and calendars, handle tasks through web services, and continue working on assignments in the background. It has also begun rolling out outbound calls to U.S. businesses, although that feature remains limited; Reuters reported that Meta was testing human contractors to handle some calls placed through Muse.
At Connect, Meta expanded that ecosystem with more connectors. It specifically announced retailers including Walmart and Best Buy, plus Shop Pay and PayPal for payments. Coverage of the broader rollout also identified Expedia, planned Instacart support, Notion, GitHub, and Box, although availability may vary by service and rollout stage.
That is the practical foundation behind the Charm. The device is not meant to be powerful because of what happens on its tiny screen. Its value would come from giving you a fast way to tell Muse what needs to happen and letting the agent work elsewhere.
There are already signs that this kind of agent still faces real-world limits. Amazon has blocked Muse from making purchases on its platform, showing that an AI agent can only act where outside services let it operate.
The Animated Character Is Part of the Product
Muse Charm also gives Meta a place to show off another Connect announcement: Muse Realtime Avatar.
Meta’s technology turns its real-time voice model into an animated character that reacts while you talk. The character shown inside the Charm is known internally as Jolly.
That gives the device a Tamagotchi-style quality. Instead of interacting with a disembodied voice coming from a speaker, the Charm gives Muse a visible personality that can follow you around.
Whether that is appealing will depend heavily on the user. Some people may find a recognizable avatar more inviting than another generic AI interface. Others may want an agent that quietly completes tasks without pretending to be a digital companion.
The Charm is clearly designed with the first group in mind.
Privacy and Security Matter More With an Agent That Can Act
A keychain button for an AI assistant is useful only if users trust what it can access.
Meta says users control Muse’s connected services and permissions. It also says Muse runs in a dedicated Secure VM and requires approval for sensitive actions.
Those safeguards describe Meta’s intended design, not a guarantee against security issues. Muse has already received a patch for a Mac vulnerability that malicious code already running on a device could exploit.
That does not mean Charm has the same weakness, but it underscores the higher stakes when an AI agent takes actions instead of just answering questions.
Meta Has Not Finished the Product Yet
The most important buying detail is also the simplest: you cannot buy Muse Charm yet.
Meta’s official Connect announcement only says that more details will arrive later this year. Zuckerberg said during the presentation that Meta was working toward having devices ready in time for the December holiday period, but the company has not announced a firm sale date.
There is also no official price. Until Meta provides those details, Muse Charm is better understood as a preview of how the company wants people to access Muse rather than as a product ready for a buying decision.
Who Is Meta Muse Charm For?
Muse Charm makes the most sense for heavy Muse users who want instant access without wearing AI glasses or constantly reaching for a phone.
It is too early to recommend the hardware. Meta still needs to confirm its price, battery life, connectivity, durability, and whether a separate gadget truly makes Muse more convenient.
The larger bet is that personal AI agents will become useful enough to justify dedicated hardware. If Muse becomes something people use dozens of times a day, a tiny keychain interface could make sense. If it remains an occasional app, Charm risks becoming another gadget in search of a purpose.
For now, Meta has shown the idea. The final product still has to prove it is worth carrying.
