The result is still an everyday sports watch, but one with considerably more personality. Seiko has priced it at $450, with release scheduled for October 2026.
That puts the HDB003 in an appealing position. You get the recognizable SKX character without paying a huge premium simply because this one celebrates an anniversary.
The appeal starts with the Edo purple dial
The HDB003 belongs to the third series of limited-edition watches celebrating Seiko’s 145th anniversary, with Edo purple serving as the central design element. Seiko says the color reflects traditions carried from ancient Edo into modern Tokyo. The dial itself is inspired by “Edo-murasaki,” a purple that was popular in clothing during the Edo period.
That is the brand story. The practical impact is simpler.
Purple gives the HDB003 more personality than conventional sports-watch colors, while the gold Seiko 5 Sports logo provides a warm contrast. Seiko says the gold lettering evokes a “bright future.” That is marketing language, but the purple and gold combination clearly distinguishes this anniversary edition from standard SKX-series models.

Familiar SKX proportions give it presence

Seiko says the three-row bracelet provides a comfortable fit while adding an elegant, luxurious feel. Comfort ultimately depends on your wrist, so that claim needs hands-on testing. The 4R36 keeps things straightforward
Inside is Seiko’s 4R36 automatic movement, with manual winding, hacking seconds, 24 jewels, day and date displays, and approximately 41 hours of power reserve.
The practical benefits are easy to appreciate. Manual winding lets you get the watch running without shaking it after it has stopped, while hacking seconds lets you stop the seconds hand when setting the time.

This limited edition is still made to be worn
The HDB003 has 10 bar water resistance, LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance, and a unidirectional rotating bezel. Around the back is a screw-down exhibition caseback marked “LIMITED EDITION.” Those specifications give it plenty of everyday practicality.
Despite its SKX series styling and unidirectional bezel, Seiko specifies 10 bar water resistance for the HDB003. Buyers specifically looking for a dive watch should keep that distinction in mind.
For everyday wear, however, stainless steel construction, LumiBrite, water resistance, and the rotating bezel make this much more than an anniversary watch destined to stay in a box.
Limited to 9,999 pieces
Seiko is producing 9,999 pieces of the HDB003. That is a relatively generous limited run, which may actually be good news if you want one to wear rather than chase on the secondary market.
At $450, the price also fits comfortably within the broader Seiko 5 Sports lineup. Current US pricing includes models such as the SRPL83 at $450, SSK023 at $450, and SSK001 at $495.
The stronger buying argument, then, is not scarcity. It is getting an unusual anniversary design without moving into an entirely different price category.
Who should buy the Seiko HDB003?
The HDB003 is a strong fit for Seiko fans who like the SKX series but want something with more personality, particularly if purple and gold appeal to you more than conventional sports-watch colors.
It also makes sense as a first mechanical Seiko for someone who wants a limited edition that remains practical enough for regular wear.
If you prefer smaller watches, sapphire crystal, or a watch specifically intended for diving, there are better technical matches.
