REVIEW – As a writer for the Gadgeteer, there are opportunities to review products that line up more in the “wants” column rather than the “needs” column. The Novium Hoverpen Interstellar is one such product. Do you “need” this fancy ballpoint pen? No, but would you “want” it? Absolutely!

Design and features
The Novium Hoverpen Interstellar in Space Black with the 18K Gold Gift Set is beautiful! It’s presented in a black and silver hefty box. Opening the flap unfolds the box with the notebook on the left side, and on the right, under the protective foam sheet, is everything else. I received the Space Black Hoverpen Interstellar with an 18K Gold Plated ring. Novium cites on their website that the Hoverpen Interstellar was named one of the Best Inventions of 2022 by Time Magazine in the design category.

Here is a chart I put together for all the different options available for the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar from their website:

Let’s start with the Hoverpen Interstellar first. The pen has some heft to it and has a twisted, tapered aluminum body. Removing the cap of the pen reveals the ballpoint tip. The cap attaches magnetically and must be installed to place the pen in the pedestal. The 18K gold-plated ring on the edge of the cap adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise flat black pen. The Hoverpen Interstellar is refillable with international standard Schmidt D1 cartridges.

The pedestal is heavy, and there will not be any concerns of it moving when removing and replacing the Hoverpen Interstellar. There is a small silver disk in the middle of the match Space Black pedestal. Put the tip of the pen in the center of the disk, and the Hoverpen Interstellar is magnetically suspended from all sides, floating in the middle of the pedestal. When you twist the pen, the curved tapered edges of the pen evoke a comet in space. Novium states,

“Research shows that micro-breaks boost idea generation, crowning our hovering pen the ultimate task-switching tool”.
Creativity and problem-solving? Perhaps. The Hoverpen Interstellar floats at a 23.5º angle in the pedestal, purposely the same as Earth’s axial tilt, no doubt.
Placing the Hoverpen Interstellar on the pedestal on top of the Novium dock (included with the gift set, but also available separately) further enhances the look and stature of the pen on display. Now the platform of the dock appears to be suspended as well!

The included pincer is required to remove the ink cartridge. And the included card stand is made from the same zinc alloy as the dock and pedestal. As a business card holder, it works better as a display rather than a holder because removing a card will also move the holder.

The 60 Daily Productivity Cards and grid-lined notebook can help inspire organization and creativity while using the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar.

Assembly, Installation, Setup
There is not much to assemble.
The Novium dock is an extra stand that gives some additional height and a futuristic design. Then place the pedestal on the dock. Finally, place the Hoverpen Interstellar in the middle of the pedestal. If not in the center, it will magnetically attach to one of the sides of the pedestal. It takes a bit of muscle memory, but soon it’ll be easily done.

I can see the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar sitting on a NASA executive’s desk, or in a Star Trek-inspired office.

Final thoughts
The Novium Hoverpen Interstellar is a functional artpiece! Even if the pen wasn’t a pen, the floating, hovering design would fit as a display piece. It’s truly a remarkable piece that also performs a useful function as a pen (and a mesmerizing fidget gadget).

On the Novium website, there is a header that reads,
“The Pen Everyone Deserves”
This brings me back to what I mentioned at the top of this review. Do you need the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar? Probably not. But do you want it? I would say “Yes”, especially if given or received as a gift. This isn’t a common gift that many will receive or an item that shows up on many popular gift lists posted around the interwebs.
