REVIEW – If your YouTube algorithm is like mine, firstly, congratulations on your lovely, eclectic tastes, but secondly, you’ve started to see e-Trikes begin to grow in popularity. I have to admit, my curiosity was piqued. I have become a huge fan of the e-bike world and in spreading the gospel, I’ve met a lot of people whose biggest concern is balance.  Mooncool released the TK Pro Electric Tricycle and in the name of summer fun (and more people to ride with), I had to see what the trike scene was all about.  The question today: is the Mooncool TK Pro Electric Trike worthy of your consideration? Let’s find out.

Design and features

As a tricycle, the TK Pro is built for comfort and convenience. From the get-go, a wider-than-average seat with a backrest comes out of the box. The pedals are made of metal; my ankles can attest to their sturdiness.

Both the front and rear baskets come with this model as well, a perk not every ebike/etrike company offers, but was very convenient. This upgraded version folds the frame near where the pedals sit for more compact travel.

The 6-speed Shimano gearbox provides a pretty industry-standard shifting experience; every single ebike we’ve interacted with has a Shimano. With the torque sensor, the more you pedal, the more assistance the motor is going to generate as it ramps up. I prefer the torque sensor over the cadence sensor, but that is something that will come down to personal preference. This etrike also includes the luxuries of cruise control, turn signals with horn, and rear speed differential for different terrain.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

The assembly process was… interesting. The trike came mostly assembled, needing the front basket and fenders mounted manually. In fact, it states the trike comes 95% assembled. However, I had to call in reinforcements to get it to 100% because this trike is not only heavy, but I found the directions in the manual different from what I would have thought the order of operations would be. Not a deal breaker by any means, but it did take some extra time to assemble. The wires for the electronics came unplugged and color-coded, making connecting them the simplest part of assembly. Mooncool includes the tools you need to put this trike together; you still might want to use your own stash, they tend to be very awkward and sometimes not even fit. For example, mounting the front basket took far longer than it should have. It is connected to the frame, just below where the handlebars end, by four bolts. It was unnecessarily difficult to get those bolts in; the two-ended allen wrench wasn’t able to make a full revolution. It took FOREVER. Well, it took my partner forever.

I had moved on to the fenders. But, jokes on me: the fenders weren’t much easier to attach. Not only because the attachment points were in such small spaces and it was almost painful to reach them, but the instructions have you install the front wheel before the fenders. Remember this kids: Fenders First.  I also ran into places where there was already a Loctite-like substance on a bolt that I not only needed to unscrew, but then screw back in.

Getting the battery seated took a minute too. As they usually are, it’s very heavy and awkward to install underneath the seat. It doesn’t slide down into locked placement, more of a line up, push, and drop. It is nice that it is key-locked to the trike, but don’t you dare lose that key.

Performance

On first ride, it was very obvious the Mooncool TK Pro offers a very different ride than I’m used to. The TK Pro only has one suspension, in the front. On paved roads, we found the ride quite bumpy at higher speeds but this isn’t a ride for speed. It’s for the adventure. Maxing out at 15.6 mph is perfect when you remember she’s got three wheels, not two. If you’ve never ridden an e-trike before, starting out on this one was a little disorienting. Since the front basket is mounted directly to the frame, it doesn’t turn when you turn the handlebars, so turning and seeing the basket stay straight caused some panic. Turning also takes a little finesse; with the wider back-end, it won’t turn on a dime like a bicycle. The acceleration felt very smooth and not jumpy. The blinkers are a neat inclusion, but don’t forget to hit the button again to turn them off.

That little red switch is the brake lock

The first long ride I took happened to be to my local farmer’s market where this machine is PEAK. The two baskets brought back my treasures and with a 450 pound weight limit I did not mind buying that extra sourdough. I had a bit of an experience going downhill on a curve trying to ignore that the front basket doesn’t move when turning was going to be a hard lesson.

The TK Pro is quite the looker. She received many compliments on the color (burgundy is just my jam but they offer six colors in this model)  and how people didn’t even know they made etrikes. I got to show off the brake locks on the handles instead of the usual kick stand, how the half throttle is gentle not jumpy, and, of course, the horn;  SO much horn testing.  I even got one of my braver friends who stands a full height of 5’2″ to try it out, and the low, step-through frame came in handy. Mooncool states that the range for rider height is between 5′ and 6’3″.

Final thoughts

The Mooncool TK Pro, I think, is a decent electronic tricycle. I believe the target audience for this type of e-trike would be someone looking for an easier, more comfortable, more physically accessible ride, with the added practicality of the front and rear baskets. I believe the most interested parties in the TK Pro were people asking if I thought it would it would be fun for retirement. We can personally attest that they’re GREAT for visiting your local events, especially if you plan on purchasing treasures. Farmers market? Obviously. County fair? You bring back that stuffed bear from hitting the milk bottles. Your local park? Absolutely. With that in mind, the assembly process definitely needs to be looked at again. The bolts being in such small spaces could make it difficult to assemble for some customers. Also, the allure of the folded bike diminishes when you realize the bike is still almost 100 pounds. The idea of loading this into a car on a day trip was an immediate nope. So, local is good.

What I like about Mooncool TK Pro Electric Trike

  • The included baskets – LOVE
  • Blinkers – you can never be too safe
  • The color – that metallic burgundy is beautiful
  • Stability – Being a trike means never having to balance on a kick stand
  • Included Seat – SO comfortable for leisurely rides
  • Cruise control – really let the trike do the work

What needs to be improved?

  • Assembly – please, Mooncool, make it easier to get those bolts in, and don’t Loctite it pre-assembly.
  • The folding feature – even folded, this is still a good-sized piece of heavy equipment, so I’m not really sure the function is necessary
  • Battery placement – it is really awkwardly placed behind and underneath the seat, unless you’re 6’5″ and have the seat set high out of the way
  • Let the front basket move when turning- pretty please
