REVIEW – Have you ever been sitting in front of a screen and daydreamed that you could ride it? I’ve reviewed a variety of electric skateboards (which has been a blast after nearly 2 decades since my last skateboarding adventures in high school), but I’ve never even seen one with a giant LED screen on the deck. When Uditer offered to let us review their newest Mini model, I jumped at the chance. Not only is this my first rolling screen-based skateboard, but also my first “mini” one after a string of longboards and cruisers.

Design and features

At first glance in daylight, the Uditer Pixel Mini electric skateboard looks like a pretty normal mini cruiser skateboard, with the battery and ESC bumps giving away the fact that it’s electric. The deck is a stiff Canadian Maple and Fiberglass affair.

The large wheels and trucks make for a surprisingly stable and easy-to-ride platform. I thought it would be more different to the longboards I’d previously been riding, but it was a very fast learning curve to adapt to the riding characteristics of the Pixel Mini.

From the side view, you can see the large battery bump and towards the rear there’s a smaller bump housing the ESC and other electronics and cabling.  The rear wheels have hub motors inside each one while the front wheels are typical skateboard wheels.

The top of the skateboard is covered in a very grippy rubbery layer above the LED screen. This layer gives as much or more grip than the more common sandpaper-like grip tape that most skateboard decks are covered with.

The LED screen itself is visible in anything but bright direct sunlight. On sunny July days during testing, even the brightest graphics and text completely wash out and are unreadable, but on cloudy days and especially at night the LED screen shines.

The 8-inch trucks make for a stable ride with pretty sharp turning at the sub-20 speeds I usually ride. These are easily adjusted with the included tool (clockwise to stiffen, counterclockwise to loosen).

The big 105mm x 65mm wheels are made from a soft TPU material that does a great job of absorbing shocks and vibrations from cracks and pebbles.

The bottom of the board has a nice red and black flame graphic along with the Uditer logo. The battery pops out by pressing the two side tabs firmly, allowing for very fast battery changes. It feels very secure when inserted. The power button and charging port are located at the back of the “front bump”.

The Pixel Mini is IP55 rated, so I wasn’t concerned at all with being caught in light rain or going through sprinklers and puddles. You wouldn’t want to fully submerge the board, but I like that I can take it anywhere without fear of the weather.

Finally, the wireless remote is on par with all the other skateboards I’ve reviewed. It’s responsive, and you can give very fine throttle inputs for controlled and gradual acceleration and deceleration. Important info is visible at a glance, even in the brightest of sunlight. There are four speed modes, four brake modes, battery status indicators for both the remote and skateboard, and if you hold the right button, it turns the LED screen on and off.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

The Uditer Pixel Mini electric skateboard is ready to ride out of the box, but after a test ride you may want to make the trucks stiffer or looser, which is quick and easy with the included truck tool.

A full charge takes around 2.5 hours with the included AC charger.

Finally, if you want to choose a different LED screen preset, customize your own text, graphics, or do freeform graffiti art you’ll want the iPixel Color app (available in the App Store and Google Play store).

Performance

The video above shows a nearly 6-minute ride that spanned about 2 miles through suburban businesses and streets. I am impressed with the Uditer Pixel Mini electric skateboard’s power and range, combined with the tighter turns compared to the longboards I’m used to. The wheels are nearly the best I’ve used (I prefer bigger and softer wheels to dampen things for my old legs). The range of the board is a bit less than some of the others I’ve used, but enough for multiple days of my usual 1-2 mile rides around the neighborhood or to the shops. I stayed mostly on speed modes 1 and 2, but did push the board to nearly 25 mph on one ride. At that high speed I did have a few minor speed wobbles, and with my skill level I’m not comfortable doing that on anything but the smoothest open areas. Higher-skilled riders will love the better-than-expected acceleration and braking while zipping around town.

Final thoughts

uditer pixel mini skateboard 30

The LED screen on the Uditer Pixel Mini electric skateboard may be what caught my eye before anything else, but I’m glad it did, because I love the rest of the package after testing it out. It’s taken the throne as my go-to riding-around-for-fun board, and fun it is. Personally, I’d probably go for the similar Uditer S3 Mini model without the screen to save a few bucks, but if you really want to make an impression then the screen will definitely wow friends and strangers alike. The most common comment I got from friends and family was “why?”, but I could tell that they were all secretly jealous.

What I like about the Uditer Pixel Mini electric skateboard

  • Love the handling
  • Big soft tires easily roll over cracks and gravel
  • LED screen on the deck is fun and easy to customize
  • Priced similar to other mini electric skateboards without LED screens

What needs to be improved?

  • If you’re going for a board this flashy, you might as well add decent Bluetooth speakers too!
