Benks ArmorVichy Kevlar 12

REVIEW – I am a sucker when it comes to phone cases. Constantly changing cases is the easiest way to feel like you have a new phone, even if it’s mid-cycle for upgrade time. The ultra thin cases are some of the best when it comes to not completely losing the natural feel of your phone but adding some style and protection. The Benks ArmorVichy Kevlar case does just that.

Benks ArmorVichy Kevlar 2

The feel of the ArmorVichy case is fantastic. It has a tacky feel that makes your phone feel incredibly secure in your hand. I think this is in part due to the Kevlar fibers which you can actually feel under your fingertips, as well as the oil-resistant UV coating. For something with no divots or bumps or anything to actually aid in gripping the phone, you never feel like you are going to drop it.

Speaking of that oil-resistant coating; it does an amazing job. In my time with this case, I never once noticed a single fingerprint on it. Of course, that’s due to the coating, but I have a feeling the pattern hides any that do show up.

It is also amazingly thin. At just 1.46mm it adds hardly any bulk to your phone. Normally, I like to take my case off at home when I’m just sitting at my desk working. However, because of the thinness, I never felt the need to take it off. It’s so they don’t even actually wanna take it off. This being a good thing since it’s actually pretty hard to get off the phone. I guess that’s a bit of a catch-22 since it will be hard to remove if you want to get it off, but I doubt it will ever accidentally/unintentionally come off.

That thinness also lends itself to the weight of the case. Or lack thereof. At 31.5 grams you almost don’t even notice any added weight.

The other negative that comes from that thinness is that there is very little lip over the front of the case. There is still a lip, but it’s minimal, as is the whole point of this case. I don’t think this is a case if you want the maximum amount of protection. If you do, you should look elsewhere.

Where you do actually get a decent amount of protection is around the camera. The ring around the camera is an elegantly molded aluminum that extends ever so slightly above the lenses. This ring also serves as the rear branding as well. With the company name “Benks” barely etched into the aluminum, it’s subtle and elegant.

Because of the thinness you would expect to have to give up the luxury of magsafe. Not in this case. The magnets are not only there but decently strong as well. It even has an alignment magnet as well, however this one seems weaker than the ring of magnets. You can normally feel the alignment magnet grab onto an accessory that also has one if you’re twisting, but I could not really feel it here.

Let’s talk about the cutouts on this case. The cutout for the USB-C on the bottom gets completely around the port which I like. At first, it seems like it’s big enough for cords with large connectors. However, on multiple occasions while I had my phone plugged into the car, the cord would be tapped and the phone would disconnect from the car. This is not going to be an issue with most cords, but if the corrector has a ton of plastic or rubber on the end it’s going to interfere a bit. You just have to be conscious of the cord you are using. I would actually say this is an issue of unnecessarily large cord ends, as opposed to the cutout being too small on the bottom of the case.

Around the buttons on both sides of the iPhone, you get what I call “valley cutouts”, where the case does not go all the way around the buttons. With this case being so thin, it’s not as jarring as it would be if it were thicker. Even so, I don’t care for the valley cutouts. I like the case to cover as much as possible. But again, you don’t buy a case like this for the coverage and the protection. Also because the case is so stiff, I wonder if the tiny bit of material that would be “around” the button would snap if you were trying to take it off and on.

In full transparency, they also sent me a black and gray weave case in addition to the red and gray. They both look stellar in my opinion.

They also sent a hardshell MagSafe wallet, and for what it is, it’s great. It will fit 3 cards comfortably. I was able to get 4 cards in, but I almost could not get them out. Three is the sweet spot. It also has a hinge so you can flip out the wallet to use as a stand, or to aid in holding it one-handed, which I love. I personally will not be using the wallet as I have a soft spot for leather. This is in no way a knock against the product itself; just my preference.

Final thoughts

I got the ArmorVichy case the day after I had decided to be on my phone less. I’m trying to be more present with the kids and had made it a point to put my phone in a zip up portfolio I keep my journal in. It did wonders for helping me stay off the phone Saturday. And then this thing shows up Sunday. I honestly love the fit and feel so much that I want to hold it more. I want to have it in hand more. So much for keeping my phone zipped up and out of hand. Ha!

In all seriousness, this is a great case. It adds a tad bit of protection while giving your phone a lot of personality. It looks and feels great. I have already bookmarked Benks’ site with the intention of getting one of their cases for the new phone when I upgrade in a couple months here.
