REVIEW – My home office (otherwise known as Gadgeteer HQ) is not a large space, and being the head Gadgeteer, it’s not hard to imagine all the gadgets that I have in that room that are both in use and waiting to be tested. I usually put all the gadgets waiting to be reviewed in a plastic bin under my desk. It’s not the best-looking solution, so when I was offered the chance to review the SONGMICS 3 drawer rolling file cabinet, I was happy to accept it. Let’s see if it’s replaced that plastic bin.

Some assembly required
The SONGMICS 3 drawer rolling file cabinet arrives at about 95% assembled, so don’t worry. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and about 10 minutes to finish the assembly.
The first step is to flip the black powder-coated steel file cabinet to access the bottom. There, you will find four threaded sockets that you can use to install the locking wheels or the stationary feet. You choose which ones to install. If you go with the wheels, you will need to use the included wrench to tighten them.
If you decide to use the stationary feet, you won’t need a tool to attach them to the bottom of the cabinet. You can just screw them in and tighten by using the foot as a knob.
The second step is to attach the handles to the front of the drawers. You can attach them by pulling out the drawer.
But I found it easier to remove the drawer completely from the cabinet. The drawers are on rails with locking latches on each side that you can press to allow them to slide off the rails.
The metal handles attach to the drawer fronts with two screws. This is where the Phillips screwdriver is needed.
The drawer fronts are made of engineered wood (aka particleboard). They look nice and feel like they will withstand everyday wear and tear.
That’s it. The SONGMICS 3-drawer filing cabinet is ready to be used. The cabinet includes a plastic organizer that snaps over the edges of the top or middle drawer.
The top drawer is # x # x # and has a 33 lb capacity, the second drawer is # x # x # with a 33 lb capacity, and the bottom drawer is # x # x # with a 44 lb capacity.
The bottom drawer can be used to hold hanging file folders. It’s up to you to provide the hanging folders as they are not included with the file cabinet.
This cabinet can be locked using either of the two keys that are included. They fit the lock built into the top drawer and when locked, all the drawers are secured.

Final thoughts
Yes, you guessed it, that plastic bin is history. The SONGMICS rolling file cabinet is a much nicer alternative, both in appearance and function. Everything stored inside is out of sight, and it’s easier to move the cabinet than the plastic bin.
