REVIEW – I’ve heard that mattresses contain millions of dust mites and that dust mites can cause people to have allergies. My better half had an allergy test many years ago that said she was allergic to dust mites. I had that in mind when asked if I wanted to review the Jimmy BX7 Pro mattress vacuum. So I agreed and here we go!
What is it?
The Jimmy BX7 Pro is a small hand vacuum that has been designed to be used on mattresses and other soft furniture to remove dust, pet hair, pet dander, dust mites, and allergens.
What’s included?
- Jimmy BX7 Pro mattress vacuum
- Extra filter
- Brush cleaning tool
- Power cord
- Manual
Design and features
My first impression of the Jimmy BX7 Pro is that it reminded me of my decades-old Kirby vacuum. It has the same shape, but the Jimmy is a handheld unit and not a push vacuum.
It has a large comfortable handle with a power and mode button on top.
The brush/roller doesn’t have bristles but has soft rubber fins.
The roller can be removed for cleaning if something gets wrapped around it. The included tool can cut threads if needed.
The bottom of the Jimmy also has two small wheels that make it smooth and easy to roll the vac back and forth across the bed, couch, etc.
The top of the BX7 Pro has a removable dirt bin.
The top flips open to reveal a filter (an extra one is included with the vac).
Under the filter is an even larger filter.
The larger filter lifts out to make cleaning the dirt easy. All the pieces can be washed. Other than the top filter, the Jimmy BX7 Pro does not include consumables. But if you clean it, it should last a long time.
Let’s vac!
Other than vacuuming dust mites, the Jimmy BX7 Pro is also great for cleaning up pet hair and dander from your bed. This is perfect for pet owners like me. I have a fluffy American Bobtail cat named Ozzy, who sheds like crazy.
Just check out the fur he left behind on the bed. I purposefully didn’t clean it for a week to let it build up for the vacuum test.
The BX7 Pro is not battery-powered, so it does have to be plugged in. Luckily, it has a long (5m (16ft) cord.
A display on the top of the vac shows the features and if they are enabled. The mode button will toggle the features: vacuum, UV light, heat (5s heating to 140℉/60℃ which will kill allergens), and a tapping feature.
What is tapping? It’s the patented composite brush roll (antistatic-fiber brush + soft rubber strip) that slaps on the fabrics, picking up fine dust and mites on the surface or embedded in the fabrics, like mattress dust, when the vacuum is working.
The display also has a bar graph that is an indicator of how much dust it’s vacuuming. If the bar is red, it means it’s very dirty, red/blue means it’s dirty, and blue means it’s clean.
With 480W power and 16Kpa suction, this is what the Jimmy BX7 Pro managed to clean off my comforter after just a couple of minutes.
I love that the vacuum does not use bags and that you can open the dirt cup and dump it straight into the trashcan. However, you might have to use your fingers to remove accumulated hair from the filter. Gross, but hey, it’s not on the bed anymore, right?
It’s great on hair, but what about dust mites?
I have some anecdotal evidence after using the Jimmy BX7 Pro. I usually wake up with a stuffy nose and sometimes a scratchy throat. So, I might be allergic to dust mites, just like my spouse. When I woke up the night after cleaning the bed with the Jimmy, my nose was not stuffy.
Coincidence? Maybe. So I devised a pseudo scientific test.
I weighed out 20 grams of baking soda (not including the measuring cup).
I sprinkled the baking soda over the bed and rubbed it into the fabric. Then, I thoroughly cleaned the BX7 Pro’s dirt cup and filter, weighed it on my digital scale. It weighed 160g empty. Then I vacuumed the bed.
With the filter removed and just the vacuumed contents in the bottom of the dirt cup, you can see that it weighed 180g. If we subtract the weight of the cup itself, it comes out to 20g which is the amount of baking soda that I sprinkled on the bed. That means that the Jimmy BX7 Pro was able to vacuum up all the tiny particles of baking soda from the bed.
What I like about the Jimmy BX7 Pro vacuum
- It has excellent suction and cleaning power
- It easily and effectively cleans the pet hair off my bed and couch quickly
What needs to be improved?
- Cord sometimes falls out
Final thoughts
Can I prove that the Jimmy BX7 Pro can vacuum and kill all the dust mites that have accumulated on/in your mattress? No, but from my casual experiments, I am impressed with this vacuum and plan to use it several times a week on my mattress. I already know that it does an excellent job cleaning up pet hair, and I really do feel like it’s helped me with my chronic stuffy nose in the mornings.
