SaddleBackLeather GrandfatherBriefcase

NEWS – Saddleback Leather is always doing interesting things with new leather designs including takes on classic leather forms like Gladstone-style bags. Their recent releases have played with variations on hard-sided cases… which brings us to the brand new Grandfather Backpack Case released this week.

The Grandfather Backpack Case is a hard-sided briefcase — box shape, clamshell opening & reinforced corners — that adds extra padding on the backside along with shoulder straps for backpack mode. There’s a beefy side handle so you can carry it like a briefcase, and a second handle on the top to help you sling it around when traveling. Stainless steel feet on the bottom and side keep your leather from getting nasty when you put the bag on the ground. The interior of the case has two 9″ by 7″ pockets that close with clasps to organize your loose stuff, while the overall interior dimensions (14.75″ by 12″ by 4.75″) leave plenty of room for your business or travel needs. It’s a beefy boy at 9 pounds unloaded, but that’s what you’re going to get with the use of top-quality leather and hardware.

The Grandfather Backpack Case is equal parts classic beauty and old-school functionality. I would have loved this bag back when I was a working artist and a creative director! At $739 it doesn’t come cheap, but it’s definitely a buy-it-for-life piece that is backed by Saddleback Leather’s 100-year warranty. It also comes in 3 different leather finishes to match your personal style.

Love the look, but at 9 lbs, it’s like dragging a side of beef with you everywhere you go. Still, it more functional than trying to stuff a laptop inside a kettlebell.

    1. Yeah… that’s the thing with Saddleback bags. They’re built to last forever, but the extra weight comes with the territory.

    1. It really does look good. I kinda want the design to be vertically oriented, opening from the top… how does it work in practice?
