Design and features

I saw the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830 Wireless All-in-One Printer as an easy way for my wife to complete some of her work tasks without having to go into the office. Being a home mortgage professional, she deals with many customer documents that have to be scanned into their system. The added benefit of making copies and printing reports for signing documents makes the WF-4830 extra valuable.

The WF-4830’s main feature is a fast, high-performance duplex (2-sided) printer for high-volume printing. The 50-sheet Auto Document Feeder makes scanning pages a breeze. Utilizing state-of-the-art PrecisionCore Heat-Free Technology and vivid DURABrite Ultra inks, it delivers professional-quality prints at a speedy 25 black/12 color pages per minute.

I was impressed by the 4.3″ color touchscreen, which not only supports touch but swiping for scrolling as well. There’s an option for turning off the touch sound, but I like the default sound they included. Connectivity includes USB, Network, and wireless capability and a USB port for connecting a USB drive. Two 250-sheet trays ensure that you’ll always have enough paper.

The back of the printer shows the access panel for clearing paper jams and the network, USB, and phone (fax) connections.

I was initially hesitant about how good the WF-4830 would be when the install program took a long time to finish (I was using the downloaded version that downloads as it installs, installing from the included CD is probably faster). That was quickly washed away by the ease of use and the versatility of performing tasks either from the computer or the printer itself.

After setting up the printer’s initial settings, such as date, time, country, etc., I proceeded to try out the scanning first. It quickly scanned my document and found that I had a choice to save my scan: Network Folder/FTP, E-mail, Computer, Memory Device, Cloud, and WSD (Web Services for Devices). Next, I could choose the various options for the scan, such as Color or B/W, PDF or Image, Resolution, etc. It was fast and easy. If you scan to a memory device such as a USB thumb drive, that drive is also accessible via your computer. Now that’s handy. If you choose to scan both sides of the documents, it does so automatically, so there’s no need to turn over the pages and re-feed them back in.

The duplex printing worked flawlessly, although I almost grabbed the page after the first side printed, but the printer sucked it back in and printed the second side.

The capability to scan documents will be especially useful for my wife, as she has to e-mail the documents to herself because her work computer is secure. Not having to go into the office will not only save her a lot of time, but it will also keep her safe.

The copy options are easy to read and change.

The WF-4830 also has a status screen that shows your ink levels, which is very convenient. Just as convenient is that the control panel with the touchscreen tilts, allowing easy reading in any lighting conditions.

The copy feature worked great, so well, that I could not tell the difference between my original color print and the color copy. Sure, it’s nice to reduce your paper use, but sometimes you just need a paper copy.

One last feature that I would like to rave about. The Epson Smart Panel app can be used to control your printer and to print from your smartphone. I’ve not been able to do that previously, and this will make that task much easier. If you’re on the same WiFi router as the printer, you simply select the printer, and you’re connected. It could not be easier.

What I like

  • Ability to operate from the computer or the printer and send items to various locations.
  • 2-Sided printing
  • Very nice touch screen
  • Auto Document Feeder for scanning and copying
  • Phone connectivity smart app

What I’d change

  • The setup program needs to prompt for WiFi connection and password

Final thoughts

I haven’t bought a new printer in quite a few years, and I have to say that I’m impressed with the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830 Wireless All-in-One Printer. It had features that I didn’t expect, like the saving of scans to an FTP folder. The wireless connectivity means fewer cables and printing from anywhere in your house, which is nice because our offices are at different ends of the house. Epson has always been a great printer company, and with this printer, they have certainly earned my following.
