Samson is announcing an update to their Zoom H4 Handy Recorder. The H4n. It does look a lot nicer than the previous model. It records high-resolution audio at 24bit/96kHz on SD/SDHC media of up to 32GB and is USB 2.0.
I have a Zoom H2 Handy Recorder, which I know is really popular with a lot of people, but I’ve never really liked it all that much. I always found the tiny mono display too hard to see.

I got the H2 because it was 1) cheap and 2) could act as a usb interface device and 3) Could act as a microphone that would fit in the soundproof “room” I made with a foldable cloth cube and acoustic foam that sits on my desktop. The audio quality of the H2 is superb, and while I agree that the screen can be a pain in the butt, did I mention that it was relatively inexpensive? 🙂 That said, the new H4 variant looks interesting. Thanks for the review!

More like a pain in the eye 😉 I’m at that age where I’m right on the edge of needing bifocals. Blah 😉
Hey, Julie, do you want to sell that H2? I’d be interested in it if the price was right (as in “cheap”).
Cranky:
Hmmmmm… I’ll have to think about it. Right now it’s the only portable recorder that I have. If I upgrade to something else, I will definitely let it go.
Fair enough, Julie.
