Ed, the Editor-in-Chief at Brighthand, just posted an article about Palm OS 6 (Cobalt) possibly not appearing until 2006. In Ed's article, palmOne's president Ed Colligan was quoted as saying, “Nobody knows when we'll start the shift to Cobalt, OS 6, or on which devices,” Mr. Colligan said. “For now, we're saying that we've built the functionality we need into the Treo and the Tungsten T5 and there's no need to confuse developers by switching. I'm not even prepared to commit us to a change next year, or the year after, at this stage.“
Is it just me, or did Palm just sign their own death warrant? As a longtime Palm OS user, I was under-impressed with their latest hardware offerings, but I wasn't too worried about it because I knew that OS6 should be coming around at any time. After all, we have been told that for the last year. Now it looks like OS6 won't be coming until…2006…maybe?
While that is probably good news for anyone that just bought a new Palm OS device, those of us that have been hoping for added OS6 capabilities will just have to continue waiting…indefinitely….or we can buy a Pocket PC. ;0)
