Time Warner Cable customers can now watch live TV on their iPads running iOS 4.2 or later. Customers who subscribe to both TWC internet service and cable service at the Standard (Extended Basic) level or higher can watch streaming live TV anywhere in their home with their home WiFi connection. The roster of channels are limited at the moment, but more channels will be added. Parental controls are not yet functional in the app, so parents will have to monitor usage by their children. There’s even a channel guide to let you know what’s playing and what’s upcoming. The TWCable TV app is free in the iTunes app store, and you’ll need a Time Warner Cable username and password to access the service.

I think the concept behind this app is great. Unfortunately Time Warner has released a highly-crippled version of what could be done.
I have a $150 Slingbox attached to my cable box. With it I can:
Watch TV on any computer, anywhere in the world for free.
Watch TV on my iPad or iPhone for the cost of the app. (Under $30) anywhere in the world.
And this is with any service provider (not just Time Warner). And any channel.
I suspect that Time Warner has taken some of the Sling technology and used it for this service.
But until they can duplicate all that is in a Slingbox, I’ll pass.
