Carrying a virtual pet everywhere has always meant finding a place to hang it. Bandai’s new Tamagotchi Ring takes a different approach: it puts the pet directly on your finger. The 28mm device uses a 0.56-inch color LCD, the smallest LCD in the series to date, and is designed to let owners raise their characters while wearing it as a ring.

Orders opened in Japan through Premium Bandai on August 27, 2026, for ¥7,700 including tax, with deliveries scheduled for February 2027. Bandai calls it the world’s smallest Tamagotchi device.

A Tamagotchi that’s 56% the length of the original

The first Tamagotchi launched on November 23, 1996, and measured roughly 50mm long. At 28mm, the Ring is only 56% of that length, while still retaining the egg-shaped body, LCD, and three-button concept that defined the original. Bandai says you operate it with buttons on the left and right.

This isn’t a return to the original 1996 screen. Bandai says color LCDs entered the series in 2008, and the Ring’s 0.56-inch panel is a color display in a much smaller body. You’re getting a virtual pet small enough to sit on your finger, but you’re also going to be interacting with a tiny screen.

Making it this small required some hardware changes

Bandai says development took two years. The resulting device contains 64 parts, consisting of 52 electronic components and 12 plastic parts. For comparison, the company says the newer Tamagotchi Paradise uses 116 parts, and the Ring’s 64-part construction is the lowest component count among Bandai’s previously released color-LCD Tamagotchi devices.

Bandai says its engineers adopted a new charging structure, reduced the internal space required, and shortened the USB connector’s protection circuitry. The Ring therefore gets another first for the series: a dedicated charger case. The Tamagotchi sits inside that case for charging rather than putting conventional USB hardware directly into the tiny Ring itself.

Thirty characters, plus a secret

Bandai says players can raise 30 Tamagotchi characters drawn from across the franchise’s 30-year history. Depending on how you care for your pet, it can also develop into a secret Tamagotchi. The roster includes Mametchi and Kuchipatchi from the original generation, along with later additions including Memetchi, Flowertchi, Lovelitchi, and Melodytchi.

That gives the Ring more substance than a miniature anniversary ornament. It’s still meant to function as a virtual pet rather than merely look like one.

Yes, your finger size matters

Turning a Tamagotchi into a ring introduces a consideration that doesn’t normally appear when buying a virtual pet: will it actually fit? That’s worth checking before ordering rather than assuming a wearable this unusual will fit every finger comfortably.

Buyer fit: A tiny Tamagotchi aimed at big fans

The Tamagotchi Ring isn’t solving an urgent technology problem. It’s turning 30 years of virtual-pet nostalgia into something strange enough for collectors to want anyway. At ¥7,700 including tax in Japan, it isn’t positioned like a basic throwback virtual pet, and international buyers using import retailers may also end up paying more once retailer markups, shipping, taxes, and other costs are included.

For newcomers who want to discover whether raising a Tamagotchi is fun, there are cheaper and easier ways to start. For longtime fans and collectors, Bandai has used the franchise’s 30th anniversary to push portable pet care into an unusually small form factor. Extreme miniaturization brings compromises: the screen is tiny, the buttons sit on the left and right, and the charger is another piece you’ll need to keep track of. If those compromises sound charming rather than annoying, you’re probably the audience Bandai had in mind.
