REVIEW – I like a good desk mat. It dresses up your desk and can hide clutter. I upgraded to the ALTI LIFT Wireless Charging Desk Mat last month and I like it, but there are a couple of things that could probably be improved on.

What is it?
The ALTI LIFT Wireless Charging Desk Mat is a desk mat with a built in wireless charging module that is meant to replace a separate charging stand or pad on your desk. It combines a full size desk mat and mouse pad with a magnetic charging attachment that sits along one edge and provides power for a phone and a second small device like earbuds. The charging module includes a pop up magnetic stand so your phone can sit upright and visible while it charges instead of lying flat. The mat itself is designed to protect your desk surface, reduce visual clutter, and keep everyday items like papers tucked out of sight between its layers. The idea is to simplify what is already on your desk by folding charging and organization into a single accessory rather than adding another gadget.

Design and features
The ALTI LIFT Wireless Charging Desk Mat arrives in two pieces: The charging part and the mat itself. They magnetically stick together on one side, but it’s detachable so you can have it on the left side or the right side. The mat itself consists of a plastic top that looks a little like leather and works well with my mouse, doubling as a mousepad. Under the plastic is a thick layer of felt and it’s up to you which side you’d like to face up. The felt protects my desk from tiny scratches, but the felt hides coffee rings, so to me both have their redeeming qualities. The two layers are bound on one side of the mat (the side with the magnets). The other side is loose, which allows you to hide paperwork in between the layers. For instance, I often refer to an academic calendar but having that paper floating around on my desktop is visually distracting. I now keep that between the desk mat layers and it’s handy when I need it but isn’t hanging around collecting coffee stains when I don’t.

The ALTI LIFT wirelessly charges my phone, and it has a little pop-up magnetic stand so that you can see your phone better. This lets me see who is calling or texting easily. The stand also rotates and the top flexes so that you can really have your phone at any angle or direction. I think this is particularly handy if you are in a Zoom meeting or are using your camera to record yourself. The one drawback to this feature is that there is an indentation where the pop-up apparatus lives when it’s not popped up. That indentation collects dust that really shows up on the black plastic. I doubt they can do anything about my dusty house, but I think if I’d received the ALTI LIFT in the other color, gray-beige, dust wouldn’t show as much.

There is also a small rectangle on the charging component that is for earbuds or other gadgets that might benefit from wireless charging. I like that I can charge my phone and earbuds at the same time. There are no particulars given on how fast the ALTI LIFT charges, but wireless charging is usually slower than wired charging, so although it doesn’t seem slow, it also wasn’t setting any speed records when I used it. I must complain a bit about the USB cord that came with this mat because I think it should be a bit longer. The cable that came with it is about 5 feet long. If your desk is deep like mine, it’s not necessarily long enough to reach whatever you are tapping into for electricity.

The ALTI LIFT Wireless Charging Desk Mat features a lot of attention to detail. There is a subtle outline around the outer edge that makes this desk mat appear a bit classier than other mats I’ve had. It is branded, but it is so subtle you might miss it. In fact, if you look at the branding on the product website, it shows much more than it does in real life. I appreciate this because the last thing I want is some company name staring at me every day while I get ready to work.

- Modular (you can use either side and have your charger on the right or left)
- Hides papers
- Can charge two devices simultaneously
What needs to be improved
- Should come with a longer cord
- Black recess collects crumbs and dust
