REVIEW – Recording sound with your phone is very easy – there’s a mic built in to the phone, right? But what about if you want to record while you’ve stepped back from your phone? Or what if you want to have a conversation with someone else and you’re in a place where there is a bit of background noise? Used to be, this would require loads of equipment – windscreens, lavaliere mics, mixers, noise-cancelling software – the works. Well, thanks to the beauty of miniaturization and a lot of advances in electronics, a system that used to cost hundreds, fit in a suitcase, and take a sound engineer 45 minutes to set up can now be deployed in seconds. And it sounds pretty good, to boot! Let’s take a closer look at this modern miracle, as presented in the BOYA Mini 2 microphone system.

Design and features
The BOYA Mini 2 mic system is a two-mic system that fits into a tiny case 2.5” x 1.75” x .75”. (For comparison, this is just a tad larger than the previous version of the AirPods Pro case!) The mics are 1.125” x .4375”. The receiver is .875” x .4375”. They are so tiny! It’s like fiddling with Lima beans! (I actually dropped the receiver in the demo video below.) The units are a smooth, glossy black plastic and fit into the case for charging. The receiver draws power from your recording device, but the mics have their own batteries in that tiny size.
When mine arrived, I pulled the case out and didn’t fully investigate the whole package. I was irritated that there was a lightning connector on the receiver (since nothing I have now has a lightning connector!), but further investigation found the USB-C receiver separate in the packaging. If you’ve still got legacy equipment with Lightning, this will enable you to use it and also upgrade to the newer ports. Boya Mini 2 makes a package without the Lightning receiver, as well as models with only one mic. The one I was sent is their most flexible system.

Assembly, Installation, Setup
The case is the charger. There’s a protective film on each mic to prevent overcharging in transit. The charger can be charged from any USB-C charger I tried, from a laptop unit to an iPad 20-watt charger. There is no setup – you plug the transmitter into the USB-C or Lightning port on your phone or tablet, and it powers on and connects to the mics over Bluetooth. If you do have an issue, there is a button on each unit to reset the Bluetooth connection.

Performance
The performance of these tiny mics is great. Sure, larger diaphragm mics would capture a wider range of audio, and provide a richer tone, but then you lose the quick, instant connection of the transmitter to the recording device. If you’re recording a podcast on a regular basis, buy a bigger, better mic. But if you want to record an episode remotely, this system will give you amazing results for a tiny investment.
Final thoughts
I have reviewed several systems like this in the past, but I am constantly amazed at how quickly the components are shrinking and providing better quality! I wanted to test with a friend’s Android phone, and we didn’t even check the model or anything; we just plugged it in and started recording. I walked away, and he faced the other way, and the bar we were in had a bit of background music going, but the resulting recording was clear and intelligible.
The BOYA Mini 2 mic system is just a little larger than an AirPods Pro 2/3 case. I carry these around in my pocket, unnoticed, every day. I frequently find places where I want to use them. With the AirPods Pro, it’s an entire sound recording studio in a space smaller than a sandwich take-out box!

What needs to be improved?
