Design and features

The CRISPi PRO has a design that is somewhat analogous to a Kitchen Aid mixer.  The container holds the food and is placed onto the base, while the motor and controls are on the top part of the unit.  Instead of lowing the mixer into the container, a removable modular base is slipped into the proper slot to raise the container up to the heating element.  It’s new and clever take on an old and reliable design.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

The CRISPi PRO came well-protected with custom inserts in a large box.  I removed all the packaging, skim read through the owner’s guide, and then washed the containers, lids, and crispers.  It was ready to go!

Performance

The first air fryer I owned was just an air fryer; it had a large basket that held the food as it was fried.  My current air fryer combines the air fryer with a toaster and an oven into a single unit – I love gadgets that save me space in the kitchen – and I still use it regularly.  What would persuade me to move away from a combination appliance like this?  The CRISPi PRO offers one feature that other air fryers do not:  portability.  The glass containers can be used to store the food that I’ve previously prepped, serve the food after it’s been fried, and store any leftovers in the fridge.  This could be very handy, especially for folks who are busy and don’t have a lot of storage space.

Using this air fryer is simple.  I select one of the glass containers, large or small, depending upon the size of the food that I’m frying; if I use the smaller one, I add the modular base to the proper slot.  I put a crisper on the bottom of the glass container, which will keep the food out of any oil or grease, and put in my food.  I slide the glass container into the air fryer, making sure that the handles go to the left and right.

I press the on button to turn it on.  The air fryer has six different modes:

  • Air Fry – For normal air frying
  • Max Crisp – For extra crispy air frying
  • Recrisp – For reheating leftovers
  • Bake/Proof – For baking desserts or preparing bread
  • Roast – For caramelizing the outside of meat
  • Dehydrate – For dehydrating meat and vegetables

I rotate the selection knob to select the mode.  I then set the time and temperature by pressing the temp and time buttons and rotating the knob.  Once I have made my choice, I press in the knob to start it.  There’s also a light button, which helps me to see if my food is done.  This could not be any easier.

To put the CRISPi PRO through its paces, I prepared three tests for it.  The first test was to fry some chicken legs and serve them on the table.  My wife drizzled olive oil on the legs and sprinkled on some spices.  I put them in the 2.5 qt container and set the CRISPi PRO to 400 for 15 minutes.  When time was up, I used a meat thermometer to measure the temperature; they weren’t quite done, so I fried them for another 5 minutes.

I took the entire container to the kitchen table.  The built-in handle also has a set of legs, so I didn’t even need a hot pad.  That was convenient.

The results were some yummy fried chicken!  The CRISPi PRO passed this test with ease.

The first lesson that I learned is to make sure my food is smaller than container.  The chicken legs were slightly taller than the sides of the 2.5 qt, and they kept bumping against the lip of the fryer.  This made a mess that could be avoided if I had used the 4 qt.

The second test was to prep a meal ahead of time in the glass container and put it into the fridge until I’m ready to eat it.  My wife followed a steak recipe in the quick start guide.  She prepared a marinade, coated the steak in it, and put in it the fridge.  At dinner time, she pulled it out and added the Brussel sprouts.  We then used the roast setting to air fry it, turning things over part way through the meal.

That completely worked.  While the steak was frying, I got the table ready for dinner.  For a couple who works late and wants to have dinner soon after getting home, this feature of the CRISPi PRO is very handy.

The second lesson that I learned to make sure that every piece of meat is the same size.  The thicker pieces of steak were a lot redder instead than the thinner ones.  Unlike a grill, I can’t control the heat for each specific piece, so I need make sure they are uniform.

The third test was to prepare a dish in the air fryer, store the leftovers in the fridge, and then reheat it later.  I decided to try the buffalo chicken dip recipe in the quick start guide.  It was easy to make, and the recipe said it would take 20 minutes to cook on the air fryer setting followed by 5 minutes on max crisp to crispy up some extra cheese on top.

The dip came out cheesy and spicey and delicious.  This would be perfect to serve at a New Year’s Eve party or during the Super Bowl.  I put the leftovers in the fridge, pulled them out the next day for lunch, and reheated them in the CRISPi PRO.  It took 8 minutes on 350, and I stirred half way.  They were quite good the second time around.

The final lesson that I learned is that I need to choose my time and temperature carefully, especially when using the 2.5 qt bowl.  The CRISPi PRO nearly burned the top of dip every time I put it in the air fryer.

Two other notes of interest:

  • The containers, lids, and crisper plates are all dishwasher safe, which makes cleaning up a breeze.
  • The bowls do not stack; this means that this air fryer will take up two spots in my already crowded kitchen, which is not ideal.

Final thoughts

ninja crispi 15

I like the CRISPi PRO.  It’s a good air fryer, and using the bowls for storage is a clever idea.  Will it replace my combo air fryer and earn a coveted spot in my kitchen?  No, it won’t.  It offers less features (e.g., it’s not a toaster) and takes more space.  Who is this gadget good for?  It would be great for a busy person who would appreciate its ability to store and serve the food in the glass containers.

What I like about the CRISPi PRO

  • Clear and easy to use controls
  • Glass bowl storage system

What needs to be improved?

  • Find a way to make the bowls stackable
