REVIEW – I went on a whale watching trip recently and found myself precariously holding my phone more than a few times. Less than a week later the Roam M Protective Case with Lanyard showed up from MAGEASY, and it’s absolutely what I should have had with me. Now I’ll be ready next time.

Design and features
Out of the gate, something is different about the Roam M Protective Case. The hook protrusions at the bottom are attachment locations for the included lanyard to be attached at two points allowing for wear around the neck or crossbody style.

The clear panel at the back allows your phone color to show through as does the open camera plateau area. The MagSafe ring and clocking magnet are called out in the same color as the perimeter frame. This coral color is a little hard to capture well on camera, but it’s surprisingly close to the lighter, less orange color of the MagSafe section of the Orange iPhone 17 Pro.

The rest of the case is injected as one part allowing the frame, buttons, hooks and camera protection lip to all be one single part. The complete case is drop tested to up to 16 feet, well past military drop standards.
The included lanyard is woven nylon with metal cable ends, standard swivel hooks and and a custom carabiner on one side.

Performance
It’s super easy to pop the iPhone 17 Pro into the Roam M Case. MAGEASY sent 2 colors to check out; Coral / Coral and Midnight / Riveride Blue. It’s also available in 2 additional colors; Transparent / Black and Mist / Misty Gray.

As would be expected, the camera area changes a bit for each of the phone models supported. Take a look.

The buttons all press well, but the Action button doesn’t have quite the tactile response and as a result you end up pressing a little harder than you want/need to. MAGEASY opted to leave an opening for the Camera Control button. It has a nice scalloped shape that makes the real button easy to find beyond just the material change.

One drawback you see above is that the skinny bridge remaining on the screen-side of the Camera Control button is really thin. It results in that bridge flexing away from the screen easily. It’s a minor quibble considering you’re getting a 16ft drop tested case, plus a well made lanyard for a fantastic price of just $39. Some of that drop protection is coming from the inner corner design where you can see there’s a compression zone designed to cushion initial impact before some of it gets transferred to the phone.

The lanyard is really well made from soft woven nylon. One end features a MAGEASY label sewn closed to a standard shoulder strap hook. The other end features a paracord style knot with a small carabiner swivel-riveted to the same style hook for quick cord removals. the paracord knot allows for easy length adjustments to suit your height or wearing style.

Below you can see the lanyard is shortened a good bit since the knot is up at shoulder level, so there’s plenty of length for taller users. You can also see how well those two anchors stabilize the strap and can help prevent your device from spinning when on the go.

MAGEASY also sent their Odyssey Strap M Rugged Utility Protective Case with Lanyard in Leatherette Midnight/Black. It’s a similar style case, but with more pronounced rugged corners, and the right half of the camera plateau protected by the same clear back as the lower section. One cool features is that the bottom two hooks can be popped out and replaced by rugged corners that match the top. The included lanyard is more of a standard flat nylon webbing with an adjustment buckle and three small molle loops at one end. It’s available only for iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max and retails for slightly more at $47.99, but if you’re wanting something even more rugged, this one goes to 20ft drop rating.

Final thoughts
I’m not the target market for lanyard cases, but have definitely had a few scenarios where it would come in very handy for helping to secure my phone against accidental drops. The cases are well made, feel good to hold and strike that grippy in hand/smooth in pocket balance that can be hard to achieve. It’s also quite refreshing to see reasonable prices considering you’re getting both a case and a unique lanyard.
What I like about X
- In-hand feel and crazy lightweight
- Well made lanyard with unique features
- Integrated lanyard mounts that don’t require a tiny cord
What needs to be improved?
- Some additional rigidity on screen-side camera control material bridge
