REVIEW – For the last few years, I’ve had chronic pain in my hands from arthritis. Two options exist: Get expensive regular shots to mask the pain or costly surgery, followed by physical therapy. I tried the shots and they are only effective for about 2-3 months. When the Comfier Hand Massager was offered to try out, I jumped at the chance. My hands are a lot less painful as a result.

Design and features

The Comfier Hand Massager massages one hand at a time. It sits on your hand like a glove. Made primarily from polyurethane (PU), hard plastic, and silk-like inner lining, it is relatively lightweight and comfortable to use.

The Comfier Hand Massager is used like a glove. The whole hand, just past the wrist, is put inside the massager while using it. The Comfier website states that the massager is designed to fit medium to larger hands. Other models were made for smaller hands. It has pretty big openings for larger fingers and wrists.

The massager has a control panel for selecting the settings. When it is worn on the right hand, the control panel sits above the palm. For the left hand, it sits on the back of the hand.
The control panel has 4 buttons for: Power, Massage mode, Intensity, and Heat level. The power button is just a simple on/off after a short hold. It can also pause a massage session.
The three massage modes are Comprehensive, Ladder, and Alternating. They differ from each other in the pattern of finger, palm, and wrist sequence. The massager has five levels of intensity. The lowest is very gentle and comforting. The highest is very strong and intense. It also has four levels of heat from off, low (110º F/43º C), medium (122º F/50º C), and high (131º F/55º C).

The massager has a UCB-C port that can connect to any charger (at least 5V and is not included). The internal battery takes about 4 hours to charge the first time, and will last long enough to complete six 15-minute massage sessions. The massager will shut off after 15 minutes of continuous use.
Performance
Using the Comfier Hand Massager is like having a glove/mitten-shaped massage therapist at your disposal. The first time I used it, it was weird, but after a few “sessions”, I was hooked. I had considerably less pain in my hands as a result. Now, I use it just about every day.
Sitting on my hand, it feels like a thick oven mitt. Its outer layer is pliable and similar to a soft padding in a helmet. It feels like leather, but it is synthetic. This inside material, which your hand touches, is a very soft and smooth, silk-like material. It is very thin.
As it worked its magic, my hand was rhythmically squeezed and treated to a nice dose of therapeutic heat to the palm and top of the hand. The fingers do not receive heat directly, but they do warm up from the radiant heat during the massage session.
The squeezing is done via internal air bladders that fill up and release during the massaging. The fingers, top/palm of my hand, and the wrist are separate “zones” that are squeezed in patterns that cycle over your hand. As higher Intensity levels are chosen, the squeezing gets tighter and tighter. My hands are kind of thick. The higher levels were not comfortable, so a less intense level felt better to me. I imagine if your hand were smaller or thinner, a higher intensity lever would be required to squeeze it adequately.
Each full-length massage session is limited to 15 minutes. This is due to a safety feature. I did do several full-length massages on one hand as an experiment. Without the heat, this would feel great. With the heat, it would get to the point where I had to stop as my hand felt too hot. Not that I would get burned, but it just felt uncomfortable. One session per hand was adequate to get a good level of pain relief.
The manual states that the internal battery will power six 15-minute massage cycles for a total of 90 minutes. After the sixth massage cycle, it beeped with a low-battery warning. Recharging then took about 4 hours. Leaving it overnight was fine to do, as it shuts off after recharging is completed.
It is relatively quiet, but not silent. The filling and releasing of air in the bladders sounds similar to an automatic blood-pressure machine. During a full 15-minute massaging session, the filling and releasing of air happens many, many times. It could be quite distracting if it’s done while watching TV with someone else.
One feature I do wish it had is a memory setting. The three settings, Mode, Intensity, and Heat, have different color lights to indicate which setting is selected. The only way to set the massager back to your favorite settings combination is to write down, or remember, the color pattern. Each time the massager is shut off, all the selections reset back to their default settings. It would be great if I could save my favorite settings to memory, so the next time, I could jump right back to the same massage settings used last time.
Final thoughts
The Comfier Hand Massager worked great for my pain relief. The pain in my hands is primarily at the base of my thumbs, just above the wrist. After each session, the pain would be gone, and it stayed that way for several hours. You can’t ask for more than that.
What I like about the Comfier Hand Massager
- Hours-long pain relief
- Fits my larger hands
- Massages the entire hand and wrist
- 3 levels of heat
What needs to be improved?
- The highest massaging level is somewhat painful to my larger hands
- It would be nice to have a memory feature
