Design and features

I haven’t had a lot of experience with headphones. Before I started trying out different brands and styles, if I could hear the music I was listening to, I was happy. Because it is a gaming headset the NUBWO Wireless gaming headset has more features than just the ability to listen to music. There is a microphone, it charges with USB-C, and comes with an auxiliary cable in case you need to plug it in. My husband is a gamer, and has specific requirements for the headphones that he uses. One of the things he likes about his current headphones is the ability to hear himself through his microphone while talking to his friends during games. I believe this ability is called sidetone. I tried finding that software available for this headset, but I since it is more of a beginner level headset it does not have the ability to hear yourself through the mic.

The microphone has a button for muting. I was a little thrown off by this, because the current headset my husband is using mutes when the microphone is pointing away from your mouth in the upward direction. This is not the case with the NUBWO. Until you push the mute button, the headset can relay all your information, whether you want to or not. The microphone arm does have the ability to move up and down, and is bendable to form to your mouth, but mute only turns on when the button is pushed. Talking through the headset is decently clear for both the user and the listener. I didn’t get any complaints that I sounded too far away or muffled.

The sound quality is good, but not great. I feel that there is a lot of room for a more fuller sound, especially the bass. However, if you’re not in it for the deep bass, or ultra surround sound, these work great. They do boast of a 7.1 surround sound, but I don’t feel like it’s very apparent. If you’re a “sound snob” then you should find something with more than this offers. I think this is a steal of a deal, especially for someone just getting started.

The volume knob is on the left side of the headset next to the power and mute buttons. It is a very smooth scroll wheel, and the volume is very responsive. Unlike some other brands, the volume levels are noticeable at small increments. I appreciate a volume knob that actually is doing something, not just a placebo.

One thing that I don’t like about the NUBWO headset is that I can’t listen and charge at the same time. I rarely have enough foresight to charge something that is still working. Luckily, the battery is decent and lasts around 100 hours of play time. There is an option to buy these headphones with a charging dock, but I wasn’t given that option when I got this headset. I have noticed that this headset doesn’t sleep. I sleep my computer when I am done, but most of my listening devices will automatically do what preserves the battery. I enjoy the fact that I don’t have to turn on, or re-sync, the headset ever, but I also don’t think I get the full 100 hours of play time. I enjoy the ease of use, but also wish that I could get more time from them or, even better, still be able to use them while they are charging.

The feel of this headset is great. It sits just right around my ears, and is snug to my head. I’ve noticed the padding in the ear cuffs can be pretty noisy. At first I thought this was because of my glasses, but I can replicate the problem when I am not wearing them, or just using my fingers to feel the padding. I make sure they are slightly bigger than my head and the squeak isn’t as noticeable. They are also a fairly lightweight set and don’t give me headaches from being squeezed too hard, or weighing me down.

Final thoughts

Especially for the price, I highly recommend these for a beginner, or casual user. They have a good sound that is clear. The noise cancelling microphone has a nice tone that is easy to hear and understand. I didn’t have any trouble hooking up to Bluetooth, and it charges with a USB-C. However, I don’t like that I can not use the headset while it is charging. While the casual user would probably be totally alright with the sound quality, there is room for improvement.
