REVIEW – Light masks are all the rage these days and while I wanted to believe in them, I just couldn’t help but think they must be another useless beauty product.  I mean it seems too good to be true…just strap on a light mask and go about your business and find your skin healthier, more even, less red, and without wrinkles?  No way. My 56 years on the planet has taught me that beauty regimens can be time-consuming, costly, and sometimes painful. I know I’m not alone and there are other mask-curious readers out there, so I decided to pick “a good one” called the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint and get to reviewing.

Design and features

Before I got the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask, I did a little research into these masks, because they are not all created equal.   I read that the effectiveness of these masks is a balance between the right wavelength for your goal and the right power.  The FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask fell right in the sweet spot to be effective, so I knew it was the right mask to try out.  It features four modes that use different wavelength combinations: anti-aging, brightening, restoring and removing acne.  Removing acne is self-explanatory and uses blue lights to kill the bacteria that make acne.  Anti-aging is similarly descriptive enough.  It reduces wrinkles and promotes collagen production.  Brightening is supposed to reduce redness, pigmentation, and oil production.  Restoring penetrates deeper into the skin to alleviate redness, encourage recovery, and soothe skin irritation.

I already used the Nira Laser around my eyes which uses heat to promote healing and collagen production, so I decided to try using the FliKEZE brightening mode to reduce skin pigmentation and redness. I have some sun damage that has left me with some pigmentation issues.  This mode involves green light and takes 10 minutes.

Here you can see I have some light leaking around my eyes. It was hard to get it to not be gappy and at the same time be comfortable.

The FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask is made of food-grade silicone and has 92 LEDs that are quite bright.  The idea is that it fits so closely to your face that you are getting even lighting at a very close range, as opposed to some other masks that are rigid and can’t conform to the shape of your head.  The mask has a strap for the top of the head and a strap for the bottom around the back of my neck just below the hairline.  It required some adjusting so there was no gap but I got it to be quite snug.  In the coming weeks, I had to strike a balance between comfort and gaps because if I strap it on too tight it hurt across the bridge of my nose. I appreciated the lip that goes around the eyes because I think it helps with keeping the light from the mask from shining in my eyes.  In some articles, I read there could be eye problems caused by the blue light setting, and although I wasn’t using that mode, the light still bugged me when there was a gap.   At first, there was a very strong rubbery smell when I used the mask but that has dissipated over time.

I had pre-charged the mask controller and I found I could use the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask for several weeks of daily use without recharging.  The treatments were super easy and I usually did them before bed while watching TV.  I will admit I looked pretty funny, but hey, improving beauty isn’t pretty sometimes!

There are quite a few contraindications with the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask instructions, some of which I became aware after having used it for a while and then cracking open the instructions.  First of all, you should check with a doctor if you are pregnant and you aren’t supposed to use if if you have had Botox within the last 3 months.  You shouldn’t use it if you have heart disease or abnormal blood pressure.  If you are prone to keloids it’s not for you.  There is a laundry list of warnings that you might want to consider if you’re purchasing this mask.

At the same time as they are warning you, FliKEZE only gives the most basic operating instructions in the book or on the website.  The pre-programmed modes last 10 minutes each and you can lengthen them if you are tolerating treatments well, but it doesn’t say in the instructions if you can use the mask in different modes during the same day or consecutively.  I might have oily uneven skin tone and also wrinkles.  Can I use brightening and anti-aging one after the other in the same session?  I don’t know.  Can I use it more than once a day?  I don’t know.  When can I expect to see results?   I don’t know.  I think the instructions could use a bit more guidance.

I used the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask for several weeks almost daily on the brightening mode.  Did I see any results?  I’m not sure I did.  I did take before and after photos so you can be the judge.

This is the before photo. Note my blotchy sun damage.

This is after using the mask for a few weeks. Is my uneven skin tone improved? I don’t know.

Final thoughts

What I like about the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask
  • It’s easy.
  • The rubbery smell went away eventually.
  • It might be effective?  I can’t tell

What needs to be improved?
  • I have a high bridge and this thing was tricky to make both comfortable and non-“gappy.”
  • The instruction book and website don’t give a whole lot of info on when to expect to see results or how to use it beyond simply picking a mode.
  • It might be effective?  I can’t tell

The jury is still out on the FliKEZE PhotonMask Quint LED face mask.  I have a feeling that these things take several months to see results, so I’m going to keep giving it a try.  There is plenty of research to show that the FliKEZE PhotonMask  SHOULD work, and it is painless and can be done while Netflix binging, so I feel like I have nothing to lose at this point.
