Most of the instrument interfaces for connecting an instrument to a computer or iPad that we’ve looked at on the Gadgeteer require the instrument to have a 1/4″ phono plug or a USB port (or adapter, like the Apple Camera Connection kit). They work great, except when you have instruments or mics with different connectors. The iTrack Solo from Focusrite, a British maker of pro-audio equipment, uses the connectors found in studios around the world. It has a microphone pre-amp and lets you attach a high-quality, professional microphone and has a second input for an instrument like a guitar, bass, or electro-acoustic guitar. It’s made for iPad, but it can be used with Mac OS X and Windows PCs. It comes with some free recording software, or you can use it with other applications you may already have. It has an aluminum body, so it’s sturdy enough to take on the road with you. It’s now available in the US at retailers like Guitar Center, Best Buy, Sam Ash, and Sweetwater. You’ll find a retailer locator on the Focusrite site, too. MSRP is $199.95, but you should be able to find it for about $159.99.
