Most flagship phones can handle demanding games, high-resolution video, and heavy multitasking. Keeping them powered through a long day is another matter. The new OnePlus 16 takes a different approach to that problem, packing a 9,000mAh battery into a phone that also features one of the fastest refresh rates available on a smartphone.

Price: ¥5,999 (About US$896)
Where to Buy: OnePlus

Launched in China on October 12, 2026, the OnePlus 16 features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, a 200MP main camera, and support for 100W wired charging. Its display can reach 185Hz in supported games, although the system-wide refresh rate tops out at 165Hz.

The OnePlus 16 has a regular starting price of CNY 5,999 (approximately US$896) in China, with an introductory price of CNY 5,699 (approximately US$850) for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration. These US-dollar figures are approximate currency conversions, not US retail prices. Pricing and regional availability are important considerations for buyers outside China.

A 9,000mAh battery is the main attraction

The OnePlus 16 features a 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, up from 7,300mAh in the OnePlus 15. That’s approximately 23% more capacity, making the battery one of the most significant hardware changes.

The extra capacity is particularly relevant to people who use their phones for navigation, video recording, or extended gaming sessions. However, the 9,000mAh figure describes battery capacity, not guaranteed endurance. How much longer the OnePlus 16 lasts will depend on its power consumption and software optimization.

The phone supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, giving users fast-charging options despite the larger battery. OnePlus has also introduced power-management technology intended to improve efficiency and battery longevity.

Battery tests will be needed to determine how much of an advantage the OnePlus 16 offers over its predecessor, particularly when running demanding games or using the higher display refresh rates.

A 165Hz display that reaches 185Hz in games

The OnePlus 16 uses a BOE-developed OLED display with a 165Hz system-wide refresh rate. In compatible games, the panel can reach 185Hz, although actual frame rates depend on the game and its settings.

Most flagship smartphones have 120Hz displays. Increasing that to 165Hz allows the screen to update more frequently, potentially making scrolling and animations appear smoother. The difference may be less noticeable during ordinary activities such as messaging or watching videos.

Oneplus 16

The 185Hz mode is aimed at mobile gamers, particularly those who play fast-paced competitive titles. It can make motion appear smoother when games support the higher refresh rate, but it won’t provide much benefit in titles limited to 60 or 120 frames per second.

According to Notebookcheck’s reporting on OnePlus’s display announcement, the panel has a 1.5K resolution and a minimum brightness of around 1 nit. The low minimum brightness could be useful for nighttime reading and gaming, although real-world display performance remains to be established through testing.

Snapdragon performance for demanding games

The OnePlus 16 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, a flagship processor built using a 2nm manufacturing process. Configurations are available with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Oneplus 16

The Snapdragon processor provides the processing power needed for demanding games, but sustained performance will depend on cooling. That’s particularly important on a phone promoting 185Hz gaming, where maintaining consistent frame rates matters more than achieving a brief performance peak.

The combination of a powerful processor and high-refresh-rate display makes the OnePlus 16 especially interesting for mobile gaming. However, its real-world performance will depend on game compatibility, thermal management, and software optimization.

A 200MP main camera leads the upgrades

The OnePlus 16 features a 200MP main camera. It’s accompanied by a 50MP ultrawide camera and a 50MP telephoto camera.

The telephoto camera also receives a larger sensor than the previous generation.

These upgrades may interest people who use their phones as their primary cameras. However, megapixel count alone doesn’t determine image quality. Autofocus, stabilization, exposure, and image processing also affect the results.

The hardware looks promising, but it’s too early to say whether the OnePlus 16 takes better photos than competing flagship phones.

Design, software, and availability

The OnePlus 16’s silver Tomorrow’s Starlight variant features rear LED lighting arranged around a large number 16 and a set of coordinates. The lighting can provide notifications for incoming calls, messages, and charging status. The rear lighting is exclusive to this color variant.

The Chinese model runs ColorOS 17 based on Android 17. Anyone considering an imported unit should check language support, Google services, and compatibility with their local mobile network.
