Hideo Kojima Physint Xbox

Sony unveiled Physint as Hideo Kojima’s return to action espionage. Now Xbox is publishing it after PlayStation pulled out, leaving the Metal Gear creator searching for someone to keep the project alive.

It’s a stunning reversal for a game introduced on PlayStation’s own stage. The creator whose work helped define Sony’s consoles will make his new spy game with Microsoft as its publishing partner. For fans waiting to see Kojima return to the genre, the welcome news is that Physint is moving forward.

Getting here took three months, according to Kojima’s account of the search.

A cancellation notice behind the scenes

In a statement on X, Kojima said PlayStation Studios unexpectedly informed his team in mid-June that it would cancel Physint. He described the project as personally important and explained that Kojima Productions spent the following three months searching for a new partner.

That puts a very different weight on the announcement. Before the public learned about the publisher switch, the studio had been working to secure a future for a game Sony had already helped introduce to the world.

PlayStation’s statement described its decision as stepping away from the collaboration. It praised Kojima’s vision and maintained that their broader relationship remained strong. Kojima’s account focused on the cancellation notice and the effort required to keep going. Sony hasn’t publicly explained its reason for dropping the project.

The history makes the split harder to shrug off. Metal Gear Solid became a defining PlayStation game, and Sony later backed Kojima Productions after its founder left Konami. Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach followed. Physint’s January 2024 State of Play reveal looked like the next chapter in that relationship.

Instead, that chapter now carries Xbox’s name.

Xbox gives Kojima’s return to espionage a future

The September 9 Xbox announcement confirms the new publishing partnership. Xbox was already working with Kojima Productions on OD, its horror project. Adding Physint puts Microsoft behind two very different expressions of Kojima’s ambitions.

There’s an obvious coup here for Xbox: a project unveiled by its rival is joining its publishing lineup. But the most encouraging part is what the agreement preserves. Kojima’s return to action espionage still has a team pursuing it and a publisher willing to back it.

Physint is a new property, with the appeal of seeing the creator of Metal Gear build something fresh in familiar territory. Its announced cast includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima’s vision combines espionage with the cinematic ambitions that have become a signature of his work.

The new relationship also reaches beyond games. Xbox and Kojima Productions plan to collaborate across film and television, though they haven’t identified specific productions under that agreement. That gives the partnership a broader creative scope than Physint alone.

For now, the resolution is concrete: the studio found its partner, and development continues. After a cancellation notice and months of searching, that’s a reason for fans to celebrate.

PS5 players still need a platform announcement

The publisher switch leaves an important question for people who first saw Physint as a reason to look forward to another PlayStation game. Xbox’s announcement doesn’t specify release platforms or confirm exclusivity. A PS5 version is neither confirmed nor ruled out by that announcement.

There’s no confirmed release date, either. Kojima’s earlier estimate of another five or six years, given in May 2025, suggested a long wait. It wasn’t a launch commitment, and this new agreement doesn’t supply one.

Those details will determine where and when players can experience the game. There’s no basis yet to buy a console for Physint or assume the one under your TV will run it.

Still, the story ends in a much better place than it began for Kojima Productions. A game its creator fought to preserve has another chance. The next reveal can finally put the attention back on the espionage, the characters, and whatever Kojima has been imagining all this time.

For everyone who wanted another spy game from him, that’s the win worth celebrating.
